Caithness

We decided to visit the Grey Cairns of Camster first as it was getting late and we needed somewhere off the beaten track to stay the night. On the way we passed what is said to be a very good example of a broch.

Carn Liath
Iron Age Broch

This is an Iron Age fortified building just north of Golspie on the A9 and is signposted with a carpark area. The site is well preserved and also has the remains of several huts around the edges. The walls are still sound and contain small chambers and steps to the top of the walls.

It dates back to between 100BC to 100AD and the building style can be seen in the much earlier chambered cairns – this is just a little more sophisticated.
