Culburnie
Stone circle
NH 491 418

From Bruiach continue on the road a short distance round the steep bend and then take the right turn signed no through road. The circle is partly in the garden of a house on the left and partly on the verge outside. There is a wide passing place before the house where you can park. Nobody seemed at home but you can see 7 of the 8 remaining stones from the side lane and front verge.

Circle stones on the front verge

The circle originally had 9 stones and Burl’s book states that the missing one was removed by a mason who died a sudden death as a consequence. This must have prevented the others going. You can see an impressive stone partly hidden by bushes in the garden that is about 2.4 metres tall and almost 1 metre wide at the SSW of the circle.

The kerb cairn and tall stone

The kerb cairn is part of the garden and is quite high and heavily planted. It appears to be about 5 metres across.

The chambered cairns at Kiltarlity are pretty much wrecked and not really worth searching for. The one in the woods near the playground is an overgrown clump of stones.
