Machrie Moor Stone Circles

Drive towards Machrie Bay and you will see a sign pointing down the farm track towards the circles. Park just beyond this in the small space provided at NR 895 330. When we went in July foot and mouth restrictions were still in place but as long as you keep to the paths it is ok.

The first site you will come to is Moss Farm Road Circle which isn’t part of the Machrie Complex. It is, unfortunately, tightly fenced in which detracts from the atmosphere and makes it a bit cramped to see it. The setting is wonderful with excellent views all round. The stones are set in a bank and there is a central cairn. Most of the stones are thin sandstone slabs and the information board suggests it might have been a kerb cairn, the OS map also marks it as a cairn.

Follow the track and after about ½ mile the first of the Machrie sites comes into view near the old farm buildings. On the way you will pas a ruined chambered tomb and on both sides of the track are standing stones about 200 metres away. Under normal circumstances there could be hours of pleasant walking to do around here.
