Nigg Cross
Carved Stone
NH 805 717

Continue on the minor road to Nigg and stop by the entrance to Nigg Old Parish Church. The stone has been moved inside the church for protection but it is open from 10.00am except in winter. This is a cross slab that was broken and a piece is missing but what remains is very intricately carved. The front has a full length cross, about 8ft (2.4m) high, filled with animal designs and coiled serpents. The back carries more designs including an eagle and a Pictish beast.

Rather than drive back we took the little ferry across to Cromarty that has room for two cars at most and goes every 30 minutes. This got us to the campsite at Fortrose to look for dolphins before heading to the Inverness sites. We were lucky and the dolphins were swimming less than 10 metres from the shore on the point with a baby.
