Skara Brae Neolithic Settlement HY 231 188 Off the B9056, 7 miles north of Stromness, signposted. The famous village of Skara Brae was uncovered after a violent storm in 1850, when the sand dunes were blown away and was excavated in the 1920s. A group of remarkably well preserved Neolithic stone houses were found. You cannot walk inside but have to view them from above but stone hearths, beds and dressers can be seen as well as early built in stone storage units in the walls. There is an exhibition and a reconstructed house on the site to visit. Admission is £4.50.

When we returned there were no coaches. It is an interesting site but you are very much channelled around. Obviously with the huge numbers visiting they can’t allow access to the rooms but the best preserved one is hard to see as it is covered in quite crude window panels so viewing is difficult.
