Shin River
Stone Circles
NC 582 049

Continue on the A839 to Lairg and turn left then right to cross the bridge. (It is worth calling in at the Countryside Centre as there is an archaeology trail here and you can get a leaflet for the one in Caithness) Carry on driving south for about ½ mile and park near the dam on a wide open area. To visit the circles here you have to walk on from here and take the left turn at the junction. The first field gate with a stile leads down to the river. The land is owned by the farm you will see ahead further down the lane. We asked permission here.

Cross the field and turn to the right where it gets boggy and you will come to the first circle on a small hillock ahead. This is the northwest circle and has 4 small stones in a small setting of around 4 metres diameter. It is a lovely spot above the river.

The second circle a short distance to the southeast is a little larger but only has three low stones. These were overgrown and hard to see. There were a few more smaller stones under the heather. I think I found it as there were other clusters of stones but this one was raised slightly and seemed right.
