Temple Wood started out as a timber circle that has been dated as one of the earliest recorded circles in Britain at around 3500BC. The northern circle is the site of the timber circle and concrete slabs mark the post holes which were discovered when the site was excavated. The southern stone circle was built later. The original stone circle had 20 stones, two of which were decorated with carvings. These can be seen on the north side of the circle.

There is a large central cist with a kerb circle around it. On the west of the circle are the remains of one of the stones that someone had tried to convert to a millstone and failed.
