Ynys
Hir This circle is within the “impact area” of the live firing range at Sennybridge Training Area and you have to get permission to visit it as there is frequent firing taking place. After sending an email to the MoD a very useful booklet of walks on MoD land was sent. If you write to - Ministry of Defence They were very efficient and let us know when it was ok to visit and where to get the range pass when we arrived. When we got there everybody was extremely helpful and friendly and suggested the best route to visit the site. On the way we saw two Red Kites flying nearby in the hills, the scenery is excellent. Ynys Hir means “the long island”. The circle is easy to find as you approach because markers have been placed in the centre of the ring as well as the nearby cairn. View
of the circle with the cairn to the left
The circle is about 18m (59ft) across and the tallest stones are in the west and reach just 0.75m (2.5ft). We counted 14 stones but just on the ESE edge of the circle is an arrangement of five more fallen stones, four of them are almost 1.5m (5ft) long. This could have been an entrance portal but it isn’t clear.

There is a hollow on the NW edge of the ring but this is probably a shell hole, A few metres to the south is a small cairn, also with a couple of hollows. The 10mm thick steel marker sign had two holes right through it, so be sure to get permission to visit the site!
