Boats are not like houses or cars. Unlike houses boats move a lot;
they twist and flex and are bodily thrown around, sometimes quite
violently. Unlike cars the inside of a boat suffers from a lack
of fresh air, especially in engine compartments and in lockers, where
most of the cables and equipment will be. They also have to
cope with salt water. A lack of fresh air and salt water is the
perfect environment for corrosion!
The sea can be a lonely place especially when your boat suffers a major
systems failure. Today's boats and sailors reply heavily on
electrical and electronic systems! Can you safely navigate your
boat without electrical power?
But all is not doom and gloom! Electrical systems can and do stand
up to the rigors of the sea, provided they properly designed, installed
and maintained. A good electrical system will withstand vibration,
shock, corrosion and extreme temperatures and it need not cost a small
fortune.
