Modern Times – diet and supplements

•The first port of call is to find out what (and how much) a tortoise would eat in the wild.

•Wild Mediterranean tortoises have a very sparse existence – but they are adapted to it.

•So in captivity we should try to emulate this – Small amounts of low protein high fibre food should be provided – with vitamin and calcium supplements.

•Excess quantities of even the right food will cause excessive growth – and all of the associated problems with this – lumpy shell, metabolic bone disease, kidney failure, kidney stones and much much more.

•Investigation should be performed into the diet appropriate for your tortoises
