Modern Times – diet and
supplements
•The first
port of call is to find out what (and how much) a tortoise would eat in the
wild.
•Wild
Mediterranean tortoises have a very sparse existence – but they are adapted to
it.
•So in
captivity we should try to emulate this – Small amounts of low protein high
fibre food should be provided – with vitamin and calcium supplements.
•Excess
quantities of even the right food will cause excessive growth – and all of the
associated problems with this – lumpy shell, metabolic bone disease, kidney
failure, kidney stones and much much more.
•Investigation
should be performed into the diet appropriate for your tortoises
