WEYMOUTH ANGLING CENTRE REPORTS

25/11/03

The first Weymouth Angling Centre Cod open took place on Sunday 23/11/03
between 11am and 5pm.The weather was a horrendous force 6-7 north westerly with horizontal rain for most of the day.
Although we had really strong wind,it was behind us which made the sea flat
(although we did loose a few beach buddies).
We made the boundaries about 100yrds past the Dragons teeth to a marker
about 500yrds past the coastguard cottages.
As we were signing on the anglers we realised that due to the turnout and
anglers already giving reports back to the registration point that we would
have to extend the westerly point boundary which we did to accommodate all the anglers.
In the end we had 144 anglers fish the event inc 3 juniors and 4 oap.The conditions were not that favourable with the weather and the water being
fairly clear, being a Cod only competition most anglers fished with big
lug/squid cocktail baits.
In the first 3 hours no Cod were caught although there were some real
quality Plaice caught with the best fish being over 3 1/2 lb caught by Jack
Seviour, other fish that were being caught were Gurnards, Dogfish, Pout,
Whiting and Dabs .
It was also amazing to see anglers retrieving there baits and catching
mackerel. The shoals are still here in big numbers.
The match stewards did a great job patrolling the beach carrying out bag
checks, signing score cards, helping anglers etc etc especially in those
conditions.
They also kept in constant touch with the organisers about Cod being caught
(if an angler caught a cod he had to get a steward to sign his card
immediately).
Fishing finished at 5pm and anglers had to be back to the scales at 6pm .
All anglers that attended the presentation had  there competitor number put
into the raffle, which was drawn while the results were being compiled (not
that it took long!)In the end we had 4 cod brought to the scales the Anglers were fishing for
the heaviest bag, heaviest cod and an open pairs. The same angler could not
win Heaviest bag and heaviest cod. The  Results are as follows 1ST Place John Van Crugten (Portland) £1000 cash 7lb 9 oz caught 16.45

Good news to all those winter anglers as the Codling have already started to show all along Chesil beach, with most of the fish only being around the 2lb mark, but not bad for early September.Anyway as you may of all ready read by Gareth last trips,we are having one hell of a time with the flatfish along marks at Cogden and Bexington.Lets just hope this continues for a while longer.Moving up the beach there are now the first signs of Triggers on the rough ground marks, with reports of some nice Bass being caught, the biggest report is a fish of 14lb,but it could just be a rumour.I did have a nice Bass weighed into the shop which went a cracking 10lb 5oz.Still plenty of Dogs,Pout,Mackeral,Red Mullet,Gurnards,Garfish and Black Bream showing.Portland is showing Wrasse, and for those anglers fishing Portland at night there is a good chance of a big Conger or even a bonus Bass. The pier are still full of Mackeral and Garfish on the float,Weymouth harbour has seen some nice Mullet caught with the largest on weighed into the shop was just over 6lb.
