News & Updates - 1 June to 12 August 2001

12 August 2001

No big new this week. Just a few bits and pieces. Firstly I've tidied up the Traffik area of the page and added a little more info.

Jana found two links here and here.

Jo has a question about the Marbella (Spain) International Film Festival back in November 1999. From what I gleaned It looks like Julia received (or accepted on someone else's behalf) some sort of "Cameraman Award". Anyone know what it was?

Beryl tells me that Julia's picture was in the August 7 issue of HELLO! Caption read:"Looking chic as ever in head-to-toe black, actress Julia Ormond steps out for a charity luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel". Julia was there in connection with her work with FilmAid.

Finally, does anyone know what's up with The Prime Gig? I've had three emails suggesting it might have been dropped from the release schedules.

Just when you think all hope is lost and that all we can hope for are more centipede stories along comes this...

Julia Ormond and Woody Harrelson set for Arizona: Julia Ormond is set to partner Woody Harrelson in the new BBC films drama Arizona. Writer director Pawel Pawlikowski is making the romantic adventure, which is set against the backdrop of a no-man's land in the Balkans. The story focuses on a local woman searching for her daughter's killer and enlisting the assistance of a UN policeman. Pawlikowski won this year's Bafta Award for the Most Promising Newcomer to British Film. Ormond is a member of the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival where a source told Ananova, "Julia has been waiting to work with the BBC again for a long time. She made her breakthrough with the BBC before setting off to base herself in America." Arizona, written by Juliette Towhidi, is expected to be made in Greece in the autumn with a budget of 5 million pounds.

Beryl found that story at the ananova news site (dated 11/5/01). She also found a similar story on the BBC (also dated May, but without cast names). If this is true then I think it's Very Good News. I became a big fan of Captives - which of course was a BBC production - and for the last year I've been thinking that Julia should go back and do another BBC type movie. Anyway, fingers crossed.

Lettie has written an article about The Barber of Siberia and you can find it at Katherine's page.

I saw a little bit of First Knight on UK Gold tonight and I want more Julia movies, damnit! :))

I've just finished watching Traffik for the fourth time. Wonderful series. If you haven't already then go and buy it while you can.

And finally Michael sent me this little clipping from the premier of First Knight in Wales.

23 July 2001

Jo has found what I think must be one of the strangest ever Julia Ormond news stories in the Daily Record (07-20-2001 pp. 58), only we have no idea which "Daily Record".

It's so odd I keep thinking it's the start of a joke and I'm waiting for a punchline. But until Julia makes more movies this is the kind of news story what I brings ya...

JULIA ORMOND, left, got the shock of her life when she ordered a plate of exotic oysters and instead found herself munching on a CENTIPEDE.

The Legends Of The Fall star was dining in a posh restaurant when she made the stomach-churning discovery. She said: "I got a centipede in my oyster and I spat it out and leapt back from the table. I told the waiter what happened and all he said was: 'Well, at least you know it's fresh!'. That was really nice. I won't forget it in hurry, that' s for sure."

Didn't I say it was odd... How the hell does a story like that even get written?

21 July 2001

Nothing much to report. I went hunting for the Region 2 Traffik DVD on Monday and I tracked my copy down in HMV. The DVD comes on two discs with no extras. (Each episode is divided into 8 chapters.) I also saw the video version in one of those big chunky plastic boxes. There were two tapes in the box. It's hard to believe that after all these years of hunting I finally have a "proper" Traffik, and it's all thanks to a remake!

Jo tells me the Blockbuster Video website shows Varian's War as available in video & DVD.

Penny tells me that Julia was at a special luncheon in Hollywood where the Golden Globe committee handed out checks for charities. She accepted the check for "FilmAid" which sent films to refugee camps in Europe.

13 July 2001

Jo found an article called "Trainer to the stars" in last week's Sunday Mirror. Julia gets this mention towards the end:

"And when Julia Ormond walked in I have never heard the gym go so quiet - she has a stunning figure."

It looks like the Varian's War video has been released (at least in Canada) for rental. According to www.rogers.com it became available July 3rd. Jo found two different cover images:

Finally Jo found another good Traffik review here.

10 July 2001

Beryl sent me this from the August issue of Premiere:

"Traffik. A hardworking Pakistani farmer, an upper-crust British minister, and a scheming German businessman are three of the characters affected by the drug trade in the award-winning British miniseries Traffik, on which Steven Soderbergh's Traffic was based. Originally aired in the U.K. in 1989, this gritty thriller showcases the drug tensions between Pakistan and England, and features a young Julia Ormond in her riveting film debut, as a junkie who's the privileged daughter of a minister. Bonus features on the DVD include "From Traffik to Traffic," production notes that explain how the miniseries evolved into the Oscar-winning movie."

7 July 2001

Jo sent me this review from the New York Times:

Before Hollywood's `Traffic' Came the Elegant `Traffik'

It says "PBS showed this stunning five- and-a-half-hour series on "Masterpiece Theater" in 1990 and is re- broadcasting it in two parts, beginning this Sunday and concluding on July 15." I assume that "this Sunday" is tomorrow, so keep your eyes open!

6 July 2001

Both Penny and Jo got in touch to tell me that the photo in the Shape magazine (Aug 2001) piece was from Cannes 1999. The only mention of Julia in the article (entitled "Get Celebrity Abs") is as a trophy client of a Hollywood trainer "whose clients include Jennifer Lopez, Julia Ormond and Kristy Swanson."

Penny also reports a photo of Julia in this months "Talk" magazine. It's from the AMFAR ball at Cannes.

5 July 2001

Laura tells me there's a small photo (pink dress at Cannes) of Julia in the latest edition of Shape Magazine. The article briefly talks about her workout routine re: her abdominal muscles. She shares the same physical trainer as Minnie Driver.

30 June 2001 General Stuff

Jo tells me that there's a small review (due to the DVD release) of Traffik in the Jun 29-Jul 6, 2001, double issue of Entertainment Weekly. The review includes a small pic of our Jules as Caroline. Unfortunately, it also describes her performance as "an unspectacular debut". All I can think is that they must have been watching a different series...

The August issue of Empire magazine has a tiny pic of Julia at Cannes on page 42.

Here's the Cannes pic from last months Film Review magazine...

Mari has discovered a very positive Canadian review of the Canadian-produced Varian's War. You can read the whole article at this site but here's the most Julia-flavoured quote:

The best [performance], however, is delivered by Julia Ormond, playing Fry's confidente, Miriam Davenport, with cocky, sexual, smoke-sucking cool. When a German soldier tells her he'd like to visit Massachusetts, she says: "I think you'd enjoy it . . . especially Salem."

29 June 2001 UK Traffik Cover Art (Finally)

Amazon UK have finally put up a cover image for the UK Traffik DVD. It's not quite as nifty as the Region 1 version, but I'm just glad that it's up at all. 16 July is getting close! Click for a bigger image.

22 June 2001 Julia in People and InStyle Magazines

Thanks to both Kim and Jo for this stuff.

There's a small "pink" pic of Julia in the "Style Watch" section of the June 25th issue of PEOPLE. It's one of those "double takes" except this time is "Three Times a Lady" with LeAnn Rimes, Marisol Thomas and our Julia.

There's also a photo of Julia in this month's In Style magazine, available now on US news-stands. The cover photo features John Travolta. Julia is one of four women featured in a one page fashion article about flared skirts. Jo found this pic on the InStyle web site and it appears to be from the Varian's War premiere.

Also from Jo: "I was checking out www.wireimage.com for anything recent and it seems that she attended the "First Annual Dinner & Humanitarian Award Presentation Benefiting the Adopt-A-Minefield Program" in L.A. on June 14, 2001. The site has a few tiny pics but I've not been able to find larger ones anywhere else so far."

Jo also found a list of Julia's 3 favorite films in French magazine Studio: "The Sacrifice" by Andrei Tarkovsky, "The Best Intentions" by Bille August, and "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Robert Mulligan.

19 June 2001 Julia In New Movie Shock?

Okay, we've been here before when Julia was supposed to be in that Garcia movie (and she wasn't), followed by the Baltic Storm movie that was supposed to start production in Feb 2001 (and hasn't). So before you read any further be warned this is probably not going to happen! But having said that I just found this today:

Looks like Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey had a good time filming his kook-house alien movie "K-Pax", although he's ready to take on the looney bin from the other side of the straightjacket and Thorazine.

The following is from CHUD correspondent Devin Faraci:

"One of the finest actors of our generation may be teaming up with one of the [arguably] most annoying people of all time. Kevin "I'm a great thespian" Spacey and Jim "I talk out of my buttcheeks" Carrey could be starring together in "FOOL ON THE HILL", about a radio station that broadcasts out of a mental hospital."

"Carrey would be the mental patient who finds the unused station in the hospital and Spacey would play the administrator who befriends the rubber-faced pinhead. Julia Ormond ("Smilla's Sense of Snow") may play one of the disturbed patients who falls for Carrey."

source

I report this only because it's not every day that there is news on a potential Julia project. I've found a few other news stories from mid-April that mention it, but most have their source as either www.ananova.com or www.chud.com. I guess this goes in the "wait and see" box.

Plus there's 15 minutes of extra footage from the original British version that was not shown on PBS.

10 June 2001

A few small things to report.

Smilla is on Irish TV next Saturday night.

The UK's 'Heat' magazine (2-8 June) had a candid photo of Julia taken at the amFAR charity thing.

Amazon.com has the following picture illustrating the new release of Traffik at the end of June. No sign of a design for the UK release yet.

6 June 2001

Mari found a couple of articles with Julia content. Here's one from the Washington Post about FilmAid. Here's one about Varian's War.

5 June 2001

Varian's War will be on the UK's Hallmark channel again on the 20 June.

Julia is in the UK's Film Review magazine (number 607). Just one photo of her in their Cannes article. She's in Jury mode and is standing beside Terry Gilliam. In fact they don't even refer to her in the caption. It's not a bad photo of her actually. It ain't tiny anyway...

3 June 2001

I've just read a TV guide that has Varian's War to be shown on the UK's Hallmark channel tomorrow night at 7pm. I don't have that channel so someone can tell me if it is on.
