24 December 2001
I found a small picture of The Prime Gig Region 1 DVD cover...
This afternoon I picked up the new issue of Total Film magazine (Feb 2002 cover date).
As I was flicking through the pages I was pleased to
discover an advert for The Prime Gig Region 2 DVD. I've scanned the cover image
and you can get a larger version if you click the image below. A different release date of
29 Jan 2002 is given.
Will this be the last update of the year? Well, here's the
major, big, once-in-a-lifetime news from Kimberly...
NEW YORK (Variety) - Bill Paxton and Julia Ormond have
begun shooting Resistance, an independently
financed drama written and directed by Todd
Komarnicki. Paxton plays an American pilot downed in
Nazi-occupied Belgium. He falls for a married woman
(Ormond) who nurses him back to health; her husband is
fighting in the resistance.
Bloody Hell! Notice the words "have begun shooting"!!!
Other large sized news includes the following found by Jo:
Ihe Intl. Press Academy announced the nominations for the sixth
annual Golden Satellite Awards. Ceremony will be held Jan. 19 at the St.
Regis Hotel in Century City.
And the nominees include:
Best Motion Picture Made for Television ... VARIAN'S WAR (Showtime)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television ...
William Hurt - VARIAN'S WAR (Showtime)
Best Performance by an Actress in a supporting role in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television
...
Julia Ormond - VARIAN'S WAR (Showtime)
Good luck to our Jules.
The other
news is that The Prime Gig will be out on Region 1 DVD on
29 Jan 2002. It's listed on amazon and elsewhere. As noted
before the UK Region 2 release is also on the way, however
Blackstar has amended the release date to Monday 21 Jan 2002.
No cover images yet, but be sure that I am on the lookout.
Jo found an interesting
filmography that includes
Julia's more, shall we say, elusive work...
I went a searching yesterday and I found this
link with
info about Julia's maybe-directing project The Dreaming Child.
Drumroll please.
It's time for the Julia Ormond Review of the Year, 2001 (short version) ...
She appeared at Cannes and we got to see lots of nice pictures
of her which made us realise just what we've been missing. See Exhibit A which follows...
See what I mean? Our Jules is just flipping lovely. Anyway...
More Prime Gig stuff. Both Beryl and Jo found this
at www.tv-now.com...

Like the new logo? I figured it was time for some colour.
It turns out blackstar is also listing The Prime Gig
on DVD. It didn't show up on my watchlist for some reason. Well,
I know what I'll be buying in January 2002. (I'll probably
order mine from play247 - they're not listing it
yet but are cheaper than blackstar and have free postage.)
Stacey got in touch with some details of the InStyle photo. It's on page 116 and it sounds
like it's a picture of Julia in the "Green" outfit from Cannes 2001.
Big News! According to Blackstar The Prime Gig
will be out to rent on video in the UK on 11 Jan 2002!
Also I just found out that Best Man to Die has been
available on video in the UK for the last few years. I ordered
mine from Amazon UK and it arrived during the week.
Finally Stacy tells me that Julia is in the December issue of InStyle
magazine. I'll post more info when I get it.
Beryl found this Julia fragment in the Hollywood Reporter's November previews:
"Nov. 12. Human Rights Watch's
annual celebration dinner honoring the work of human rights activists around the
world. Dustin Hoffman is emcee. Presenters include Julia Ormond, Ben Stiller, Alfre
Woodard and Noah Wyle. 6:30 p.m. Regent Beverly Wilshire."
Yeah, I know it's a long time between updates, but (a) I have actual
hard work to do, and (b) there's been no news anyway! :)) I was hoping
that Julia was off in Greece making that Arizona movie for the
BBC about now, but Beryl found these photos at www.wireimage.com
where Julia was seen smiling at some fashion show or other...
Jo found some other non-news about a month ago.
Woman's Journal magazine named Britain's most
glamorous woman over 30.
Catherine flipping Zeta flipping Jones was at number 1.
Other people on the list included
Nigella Lawson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Liz Hurley,
Minnie Driver and Helen Baxendale.
My favorite ballet dancer (=ahem=)
Darcey Bussell was at number 19, and our
own Julia Ormond was at number 20. Yes, I know it's mad putting her at
number 20, but we're lucky she's on the list at all.
Sorry for the delay between updates. I may have more Julia-shaped
time on my hands after Christmas.
I think It'll be some time before there's any Julia news to speak
of, so in the meantime here's the Julia bits of the September Elle magazine.
Thanks to Penny for typing it.
If anyone in the UK wants a cheap Captives poster then rush over to
moviemarket.
It's included in their September poster sale and costs £4.50 instead of the usual £9.50.
Beryl has let me know that Julia gets a mention in the September Elle
magazine. There's an article about Cannes and there's a pic of Julia
with husband Jon. "Nothing earth-shattering."
Beryl got in touch with Bill Wheeler, the screenwriter of Julia's latest
movie The Prime Gig. He had this information about its release (or lack of):
Fine Line is not going to release the film. Unfortunately our producer/financier,
Independent Pictures went completely bankrupt in February, and as a result of that,
and other decisions having to do with the AOL/Time Warner/New Line shake-up, the film
will be sold to cable television, where it will receive its premiere. I don't know
exactly when that will be.
Julia gets a mention in today's London Telegraph newspaper magazine in an article
about British actors and the affect Hollywood has had on them.
It's by Maria Alvarez who wrote a good article about Julia this
time last year. As there is a serious lack of news (as usual)
I have included it here.
From here to LA
Brit celebs arrive in LA looking for career miracles rather like
Alice landing on the other side of the looking glass. Wide-eyed
with wonder, they hit this crazy world of Tequila sunrise skies
and bizarre rules - where two-hour dawn workouts are the norm,
yet walking is verboten. Ugliness is tantamount to a mortal sin
but lying, as in hype, is written into the constitution.
In fact, living in LA LA Iand is exactly like being on Lewis Carroll's
chessboard.
Agents bustle around etenally late for endless meetings, imperious movie
queens ask for impossible salaries, their contracts filled with unreasonable
demands for a Roman army of dieticians and hairdressers. Their overriding aim
is to avoid being a pawn in life.
So the first rule of LA is the makeover, since those hoping to retain their
right to bad hair days are destined for etemal pawndom or worse, ignominious
exile. The second is a suspension of disbelief. Which should be a clinch to
most actors, who trade in the stuff. But no, some,
whether through sheer bad luck or an over-sensitive natture, end up running
for ever on the same spot, deluded by the treacherous winds of hype, into
thinking that they are actually Going Somewhere. Take the case of the talented
Julia Ormond. After being wildly trumpeted all it took was one flop and then,
off with her crown.
However a plucky gang, including Kate Beckinale and Minnie Driver, manage to
trot back and forth between the two worlds relatively unscathed. With their
discreet successes and Ralph Lauren dresses in tow, they are all the better
for their glam repackaging. While the lucky few - such as Catherine Zeta-Jones
and Gary Oldman arrive, conquer and do just as they please.
Meanwhile, failures can console themselves with their true Brit individuality
and point to the expats who have gone gaga in LA LA land, such as the perma-tanned
Rod Stewart, who seems incapable of seeing the world tluough anything other than blonde
highlights.
There's also this small picture with the following caption:
"In 1995 Julia Ormond was hailed by Hollywood as the
next Audrey Hepburn but, as is often the fate of those bestowed
with greatness before proving their worth, she hasn't quite lived up to these
expectations."
I guess until Julia makes some new films we will be stuck with
articles looking to the past rather than the future.
