We Have Pink!

Major thanks to Ivo for sending me these "Pink" shots of Julia at the Liz Taylor charity party at Cannes.

Mari has sent me a picture of Julia at the awards show that closed the festival. (Julia is the good looking on in the middle!)

Penny tells me that the new People magazine has a big picture of Julia in the red dress.

Jo mentions that there is streaming video on the Cannes official website with two Julia segments. There's also a streaming video on the filmfestivals.com site.

I've started a Cannes 2001 page with all the photos on it.

Yet More Cannes Photos

Many more photos from Cannes, most of which are of the red dress, and that is no bad thing let me tell you... Also a few "pink" thumbnails from the amfAR charity party. I'm still looking for a full size version.

Actual size...

Here's a link to a bunch of thumbnails: wireimage

Thanks to Penny and Jo. I will eventually put all the Cannes 2001 pics on their own page.

20 May 2001

More Cannes type things

Two more "red" photos for your viewing enjoyment, as found on the IMDB...

I'm still looking for pics of the charity outfit. Gosh, Julia's had as many outfits in Cannes this year as Queen Amidala had in Episode I...

19 May 2001

Le Another Cannes Update...

Penny tells me that the Bravo station is televising the closing ceremonies on May 20th at 7PM.

Julia wore her third outfit at "The Man Who Wasn't There" premiere. Thanks to Jo, Beryl and Mari for finding these three pictures.

Le New Cannes Update...

The caption on the first picture reads: "British actress and member of the jury Julia Ormond arrives with an unidentified friend for the presentation of the expanded version of Apocalypse Now at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes 11 May 2001."

Mr Julia of the sunglasses is now "an unidentified friend". Thanks again Jo for the first and Mari for the second. Looks like Julia brought at least two dresses with her.

13 May 2001

Cannes. Here's a couple more pictures of Julia in that red dress. The guy in the sunglasses is none other than Mr Julia: Jon Rubin. Nice that he can tag along, eh? :))

The Rubin/Julia pic was found by Beryl on UK site www.peoplenews.com. The other was found by Jo. Now, can anyone find a bigger picture of Julia in the red dress? (Like, a three foot tall poster would do me fine...) Mental note: I must check Hello magazine next week.

Lettie's thoughts on the elegant woman list continued:

41-50 I was hugely disappointed with the list in general. So far everybody that I would be personally inclined to have up near the top are near the bottom or not on the list at all. In section 41-50 I ask myself what is beautiful about Juliannne Moore or Jade Jaggar. They are ok as far as average attraction goes, but to put them on the top 100 list of the world's most beautiful women is going too far, especially when you compare them to Julia Ormond who is way down the list. Disgusting...

In section 51-60 I felt that most of the women should not have been there at all. Liz Taylor should have been further up the list, at least in the the 40 somewhere. Penelop Cruz should have been given a higher ranking too. She is naturally pretty and has a meditteranean elegance about her.

61-70 is a section that incredibly I had few problems with. They got it about right. However, I think that Honor Blackman and Bianca Jaggar should have been a little further up. Had I been compiling the list I would have put them up in the top 50 somewhere. Actually I think that I may compile my own list for Jack's underated actresses page, albeit, they will not all be British, but he's an easy going guy.

71-80. Again some of these women deserved a much higher ranking. I would have put Amanda Burton in the top 50.

I have asked myself time and time again since studying this list, do the experts have any eyesight at all? Since when did Julia Roberts equal Julia Ormond or Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in the beauty leagues. Julia Roberts is where she ought to be on the list. She is a nice looking woman, but she most certainly does not possess the classic beauty of Julia of Mary. Kate Winslet should not be on the list at all. Lucy Liu, Halle Berry and Minnie Driver are just about right where I would have put them had the list been my own. Ann Bancroft, Julia Ormond, Mary E. Mastrantonio and Natalie Wood shoud all have been much higher.

91-100 It is clear that they were running out of names to add here. Dame Judy Dench should have beem much higher up the list in the top 50. I think that Cindy Crawford possesses a natural beauty beneath all that make up and glamour. I think that she deserved to be much higher up the list. I am undecided where. As for the rest, the jury wasted pen ink mentioning them. I have decided to do my own top 100, so keep a look out on Jack's page. All comments welcome.

Gratuitous Darcey Bussell photo:

Just in case you were wondering what she looks like.

Traffik. I hope you all lost a lot of sleep on Monday night then Channel 4 showed the last two episodes of Traffik at midnight. It was worth staying up for. The final episode had a lot of material missing from the US versions I had seen, mainly involving Julia's character. If you went to bed then shame on you! (It seems that the new USA VHS and DVD releases will include the "missing" 15 minutes.)

Cannes Update. Julia is of course a Jury member at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Here's what I have so far...

A quote from Yahoo news:

Another juror, English actress Julia Ormond, said going to the cinema should be a complete experience.

"I think the movie experience is a very complete one as it touches you on all sorts of levels. It's a very emotional one,'' she said.

Jury photos: photo 1 | photo 2 | photo 3

A couple of those photos might be the same. They're all offsite links. None of them show Julia very well so my interest is minimal!

However Mari did find a good one and here it is:

Thanks to Mari and Penny for that lot.

Lettie has had some thoughts about the elegant woman list. (See 5 May entry below.)

This is my opinion of the poll.

Obviously I feel that Julia should have been in the Top Ten. she is by far the most beautiful actress in the world today, albeit, she would have had some competition from Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor had they been the same generation. I was very disappointed to see that they had omitted Jean Simmons too. Jack is doing an "under-rated British Actress" page and I should like to see her on it.

The top ten would have been ok had they omitted Zeta, Moss and Diana. No offence to Diana but she is not in the same beauty/elegance league as Audrey Hepburn or Julia Ormond. Diana should have been in the top 100 but somewhere in the latter half. Zeta and Moss should not have been on the list at all. They are 'cheap' and 'tacky'. Their facial features are not that great.

I had problems with section 11 to 20 as well. Wallis simpson and Jackie Kennedy being the main offenders. These two women were neither elegant or beautiful. Money made these two women into the people that they were. Neither possessed natural beauty or grace. Nicole Kidman should have been in the top 100 but again, like Diana, she was ranked too high.

21 - 30 The main offenders here are Sarah Jessica Parker, Yasmin Le Bon and Princess Caroline. Indeed, the Sarah should not have been on the list at all and the latter two should have been further down it.

31 -40 Hilary Swank and Hilary Clinton are not even mediocre. Apart from this the list was acceptable.

Right! Anyone else want to add their thoughts?

For those of you who have read this far down, you will have seen a mention of an "under-rated British Actress" page. This is very much under-construction, but if you are interested and you want to get an idea of what it might end up like then click here.

6 May 2001

The offical Cannes site has a Julia Ormond page. There's a bio and a photo I haven't seen before. Click here to see the page. Thanks Jo.

5 May 2001

Amazon.com now have a scan of the Traffik DVD cover. Click the small image below to see the larger pic.

Beryl tells me that the May 1 issue of UK magazine Hello! has a photo of Julia, William Hurt, Prince Edward and a Showtime exec at the premiere of Varian's War. This magazine is off the shelves in the UK, but larger bookstores in the USA may still have a copy.

Here's that list of THE TOP ONE HUNDRED SOPHISTICATED LADIES with my own comments...

[1 - 10] Grace Kelly Audrey Hepburn Princess Diana Catherine Deneuve Catherine Zeta Jones Isabella Rossellini Lauren Bacall Kate Moss Sophia Loren Charlotte Rampling

[11 - 20] Coco Chanel Katharine Hepburn Ava Gardner Jackie Kennedy Wallis Simpson Nicole Kidman Cate Blanchett Lauren Hutton Ingrid Bergman Greta Garbo

[41 - 50] Paloma Picasso Sienna Guillory Liv Tyler Jeanne Moreau Jade Jagger Christy Turlington Isabella Adjani Sade Marlene Dietrich Marianne Faithfull

[51 - 60] Penelope Cruz Juliette Greco Kristin Davis Carolyn Bessette Kennedy Lena Horne Madame Pompadour Elizabeth I Elizabeth Taylor Billie Holiday Aung San Suu Kyi

[61 - 70] Michelle Yeoh Jemima Khan Iman Annette Bening Gwyneth Paltrow Cameron Diaz Darcey Bussell Viscountess Serena Linley Honor Blackman Bianca Jagger

[91 - 100] Madonna Dame Judi Dench Cindy Crawford Denise Lewis Joan Allen Normandie White Renee Zellweger Debbie Harry Bjork Vivienne Westwood

A few observations...

At least the top ten makes some kind of sense if you remove the Zeta and Kate Moss.

Juliette Binoche: If our Julia made more movies then she'd be up beside Juliette Binoche. Of course most people get them mixed up anyway.

Liv Tyler: Some days I think Liv is cute, other days I don't.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Oh, fer F***'s sake! (Can you tell I am not a fan?)

Darcey Bussell: Darcey was up for Sabrina. She's lovely. She's my favorite ballet dancer, and let me tell you now, I know nothing about ballet dancers...

Madonna: Madonna???!!!??? "Sure, lets put a skanky 'ho on the list!"

3 May 2001

A new poll in Woman's Journal magazine puts Julia in a list of the top 100 most elegant woman in the world. The list mostly contains actresses, royalty and a few supermodels. Most I have no problem with, for example it's nice to see Darcey Bussell mentioned, and on a first read through the list I see no mention of the dread Liz Hurley.

If anyone is interested in seeing the complete list then let me know and I may post it here. Bound to be worth some discussion!

Thanks Jo.

Laura emailed me to say that there was a small clip of Julia on "Entertainment Tonight" yesterday evening - they mentioned her hosting the A Diamond Is Forever charity do at Cannes.
