Penny got in touch to say that Iron Jawed Angels will be premiering on HBO in February.
First of all Kim tells me that Iron Jawed Angels will get it's premiere at the Sundance film festival next January.
Jo got her hands on the Russian Region 5 PAL DVD of Resistance via ebay...
"Julia is breathtaking...like her performance. As with all her roles, Ms. Ormond disappears into the character and we're left with a wonderfully thougthful and beautifully executed creation/interpretation of Claire. — too bad half of her dialogue is in French!! I'm dying for an English version of the DVD, or at least one that provides English subtitles for the French dialogue. Fortunatley, I'd read the book so I have a good idea of what's going on and being said in the French-only scenes."
Lettie noticed some new Julia photos at Wireimage. Seems there was some sort of Human Rights thing going on this week. The guy who plays President Palmer in 24 was also there. Here's a few thumbnails. (Scroll down to this time last November. Guess what the news was then...)
Yvonne got in touch last week from the Netherlands. She's tracked down a few snippets about the mysterious Resistance...
"Well, the exact release date of Résistance in the cinema in Holland was June 12th! I read today in de Volkskrant [newspaper] that First Floor Features is almost broke because of some films like Résistance...
I found 4 articles, reviews and pages with information about Résistance. [see below]
The VHS tape will be out on rental December 12th 2003.
The Article from the NRC Handelsblad gives the normal synopis and is not that enthousiastic about this movie. They think that there are no surprises in this movie. They do not agree with using Dutch tax-payer's money for this film, because there is nothing Dutch in this movie, they even speak French in Belgium.
I don't have more positive news, sorry."
Here are the links for all you Dutch-speakers out there...
Make of this what you will. Jo has alerted me to an item on ebay - a Russian Region 5 DVD of Resistance on sale in Canada! Be aware that the seller has no feedback. Click here to see the auction item.
This just in from Todd. the long awaited Julia epic Resistance will be premiering October 24th (this Friday!) in Los Angeles at the "City of Angels Film Festival". Here's the site with a couple of Julia pics... www.cityofangelsfilmfest.org If anyone sees the thing be sure to let me know!
Something small, but worth reporting from Penny. She was watching HBO and they showed a few snips of Iron Jawed Angels as if it were planned for this season. Two quickie shots of Jules.
I guess this isn't news, but once more it's been a slow month. John writes: "I just saw Julia Ormond at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, DC having lunch." I would guess that it's charity related.
Penny has seen Searching for Debra Winger in order to catch a glimpse of Julia. Here is her report...
I missed the first showing of Searching for Debra Winger but I got to see it last night. Jules had a small part (in fact you have to sit thru the rambling of some really forgetable actresses before getting to Jules). Jules and Tracey give the only light moments in this long boring talk fest.
Jules rides up in the elevator with Rosanna A, and there is some laughter. Then Jules gets a dermatalogical interview and she looks smashing. No makeup!!!!!
This interview was taken during the time she was on the Jury in Cannes, or should I say appearing at the Jury in Cannes. Maybe a half minute talk. At the end of the film, over the credits, she is seen going out of the hotel in that pink dress with husband. Jules says Hi and he says Hi.
End!!!
The only other highlight was Vanessa Redgrave. After that it was a long whinning US actress fest. Laura Dern and Martha Plimpto???
I was hoping that she would ask Jules about all that build-up she got with Legends and Sabrina, but alas not one interesting question.
Jules did not whine. Vanessa didn't and neither did Tracey. Also Charlotte Rampling. There is something to be said for the Brit actresses verses the boob babes of Hollywood.
What was really funny was all the talk about these actresses hating the need for that surgical plastic look and there was Melanie Griffith looking like a poster for excessive surgery.
Boring film. Great to see Jules.
So now we know.
Penny found a couple of links. First here's what Julia does in that "Searching for Debra Winger" docu...
Julia Ormond, 38, and Tracy Ullmann, 43, offer a humorous English perspective - Ullmann mimicking the Botox look and Ormond pulling her skin back to parody a facelift.
Click this link for a google link to a longer article. (Linking directly won't work.)
google link to news24 articleSecondly here's an article about a potential role for Julia.
Orchard has now sent offers to Gabriel Byrne for the Alberg role, and to Julia Ormond for Cassandra.
Jo has sent me the Resistance poster image below. Also the movie is out to rent on DVD in The Netherlands in September 2003. Check out www.a-film.nl. If anyone from the Netherlands is reading this perhaps they can keep an eye open and get back to me.
Top marks to Beryl for finging an official Resistance site at www.firstfloorfeatures.com. There's a trailer (14mb quicktime) and a few stills. Nice to finaly get a glimpse of the movie, but no obvious release date as far as I can see.
Carolina has sent me a link to her new Legends of the Fall site. You can find it at www.wildbluestone.com. If you like Legends check it out.
Mari has found this story about a movie release from "independent distributor Indican Pictures".
I include it here as it's been a slow news week month year decade,
but I'm 90% sure this is the other Indican outfit. I have a feeling Julia's outfit is Indican Productions.
Still, it's worth listing in case I'm wrong.

Bob has informed me of the July 14th issue of Time magazine. In a side-bar to an article on the female stars of this summer's movies, they list "Flourished and Fizzled": "It isn't fair, but some actresses who spring to life in silly summer fare graduate to fall and its Oscar-bait movies, while others just fade away." Under flourish, they list Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Connelly, and Cameron Diaz. Under fizzle, there's Jeanne Tripplehorn, Janine Turner and Julia Ormond. The comment under Julia is: Fizzle: Held her own against big fish Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall but now swims the the small fry".
This just in from Penny... That "Searching for Debra Winger" docu is finally going to be aired. It will be on Showtime on August the 18th.

I've just had an email from Cooper Owen Limited concerning an auction for a Julia Ormond signed photograph and drawing.

Penny informs me that Resistance is the opening movie at the 2003 Stony Brook Film Festival. If anyone want's to go it's the north shore of Long Island, approximately 60 miles east of New York City. Here's a link.
![]() For more profiles go to: AskMen.com |
Julia Ormond is AskMen's Actress of the week on July 14th, 2003. Her feature is divided into 3 pages with a bio and a commentary. More importantly they are linking back to this little ol' page right here. If you click the above picture it'll take you to their Julia page.
Penny informs me that Julia's latest narration epic, The Nazi Officer's Wife, will be shown on A & E. Jo tells me that it's listed to buy as a DVD on Amazon. The release date is July.
Mari tells me that you can view the Julia auction item at Yahoo Auctions now!
Lettie found some new thumbnail images over on the wireimage site. Seems there was another charity thingie...
Mari from the Official Gillian Anderson Web Site (and one of my long-time correspondents) got in touch about an article that will be of interest:
"A couple of months ago, Julia was a guest speaker at my friend's school not too far from San Francisco. Julia graciously signed a flyer to help raise funds for Neurofibromatosis, Inc. (Gillian Anderson's #1 charitable cause; her brother suffers from this currently incurable disorder). Please help us promote this item and the auction."
You can find out more and see a photo of the item at www.gilliananderson.ws. This item will be up for auction from June 15 - June 22. For a direct link to the auction site at Yahoo! Auctions: auctions.yahoo.com/booth/gawscharity
Penny found an article mentioning Julia here.
Penny found this article mentioning the The Nazi Officer's Wife.
According to the IMDB the WW2 movie Resistance is being released in the Netherlands on 19 June 2003.
Michael found this photo of Julia with a Russian group called Na-Na. Might I suggest she audition for a role in CSI Miami?
Penny found this article about Julia's involvement in the charity FilmAid.
Three things of interest today...
Item One: Michael kindly translated the article from last year's Italian Vogue and you can read it here.
Item Two: Penny has discovered a new Julia movie. Now, don't get too excited...
The Nazi Officer's Wife - "Julia Ormond serves as the haunting voice of the past, reading Beer's letters that were recovered after the war." The film that is rated 3 Stars and is part of the Miami Internation Film Festival
Item Three: Do you want to buy Julia's red dress from Cannes? You can bid on it on ebay!
Jo found a thumbnail image of Julia getting her "Crystal Award". It's to honour artists who have made outstanding contributions to cross-cultural understanding by using their art to reach out to other cultures. Or something.
My main reaction is, "has her hair got long again?"
Penny sent me this story ages ago. Julia gets a mention at the start. It appears that the World Economic Forum is giving her an award. Huh?
Some points...
Penny informs me that Julia got to go to a big party at the White House. It's supposed to be on TV on the 27th. Here's the link...
www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/4697169.htmJulia was on UK TV this week. Twice. After midnight. She was in a two-part Channel 4 thing called "Hollywood Religions" and popped up as a talking head. Her hair was quite long so I'm guessing it was filmed in 2001. Anyways, you can set your videos for the repeat showings next week. 4:55 a.m. on the 24th and 27th of December 2002.
Penny found a Julia mention in this article about Iron-jawed Angels. The IMDB claims it'll be on TV next March by the way.
Thanks to Jo for some bigger "Voices for Justice" pictures from Electric Library. I have added them to the all new Gallery 3. Also I've done two new scans, one from 1995 Vanity Fair and one from the Italian Vogue from this year.
I just did another search on wireimage and I found some new thumbnails of Julia at something called "Voices for Justice 2002 Human Rights Watch Annual Dinner" which appears to have been held on the 19th. Here are a couple of thumbnails...
Thanks to Jo for these two bigger "Vertu" pictures from Electric Library...

Todd got in touch to let me know about new Julia images at wireimage. She was at the "Vertu client opening", whatever that is. I've included three thumbnails below...

Penny found this in a gossip column:
"Kudos to big-hearted stars Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, Patrick Dempsey, JULIA ORMOND, and Brook Smith. They were filming on location oe block away when a man was shot by the sniper-creeps in Ashland, Va.--and immediately passed the hat for the poor guys family."
She also saw "a small coming attraction of Iron Angels on HBO , no mention of Jules, just Hillary and Angelica. But saw a quickie of Jules."
This just in from Jo:
"IMDb shows a March 2003 release date for HBO's Iron-jawed Angels. Also check out this link if your German is passable."
Penny found this story about Julia's new TV movie here.
Amidst shootings, the show goes on
Some of Hollywood's top talents were within range of the sniper last week. Julia Ormond, Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, Brooke Smith and Patrick Dempsey were all on location in Richmond, Va., filming HBO's "Iron Jawed Angels," as the sniper continued his Washington-area killing spree. The movie's cast and crew were just a block away when the sniper shot a 37-year-old man outside the Ponderosa Steakhouse, a local film source tells the New York Daily News. But despite the scary atmosphere, executive producers Robin Forman and Len Amato did not hold up production.
Jo sent me these two photos ages ago and I'm only getting around to them now. Our Julia was at some sort of minefield charity do or other.
You can find more thumbnails at wireimage.com. Thanks to Jo and everyone else who told me about the pictures.
Yahoo reported this today:
NEW YORK (Variety) - Julia Ormond and Brooke Smith will star with Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, Patrick Dempsey and Frances O'Connor in "Iron Jawed Angels," an HBO FIlms picture about women's battle to gain the right to vote.
Set in 1915, the Katja von Garnier-directed film follows suffragist Alice Paul (Swank), whose efforts led to her imprisonment.
Ormond takes the role of Inez Mulholland, who organized a demonstration down Pennsylvania Avenue. Ormond most recently starred with Bill Paxton in the Todd Komarnicki-directed indie "Resistance." Smith was most recently seen in "Bad Company."
Smilla will finally make it onto BBC2 tomorrow night at 11pm. Thanks to Lettie for the alert.
It's been a while, huh? Anyway, Julia is in the September 2002 issue of Italian Vogue. Six pages near the back. I'll see if I can get a translation done.
The people who ran the message board and guestbook have shut up shop, hence no guestbook or message board.
Forget about Smilla on BBC2 tomorrow night. Some listings magazines have it but most don't.
Jo informs me that Traffik is on the Sundance Channel this month. If I read their website (www.sundancechannel.com) correctly part 1 is on tomorrow.
Been a bit of a slow news month, huh? I've wanted to do an update but I guess Julia didn't get invited to any charity parties with Fidel Castro. So here's the news: Smilla is on BBC2 next Saturday night. That might be of interest to a couple of you.
I had just under 1000 visits to the front page during the first two days of August, way above average. It turns out that Legends and First Knight were on US TV again and I guess a bunch of people with good taste did web searches for an actress called Ormond.
Oh, I got the Canadian DVD of Captives. It was only £12.99 from www.play.com. First let me say how nice it is to have a DVD of what might be my favourite Julia movie. There's a nice sharp picture to appreciate our Jules and her not-very-ugliness. But what really cracks me up is the box cover design. You see, there's a reversible English/French cover. I assumed they meant English on one side and French on the other side, as that would be logical. No. On one side it's English and French while on the other side it's French and English! Finally the blurb on the back is hilarious and has must have been written by someone who has not seen the movie. I mean, you would expect some mention of the fact that Julia plays a prison dentist and Tim Roth plays a prisoner...
"After a beautiful woman unexpectedly finds passion with a mysterious loner, they secretly begin an illicit affair!" It goes on like that with lots of exclamation marks. Still, it's a nice disk to have.
Some DVD info for ya. First of all Dave reminds me that Varian's War got a region 1 release on 18 June. For a change it's a Julia DVD with a few features:
The running time is 2 Hrs 2 Mins. It's listed on the likes of amazon so it should be easy to find in the USA. I went hunting last night to see if a UK shop has it. I found a site called www.dc-dvd.co.uk that is listing a bunch of Region 1 Julia DVDs. The cost of Varian is £18.25. Expensive, but the best option until www.play.com offers it in the UK.
Speaking of which, play are listing the region 1 Captives for just £12.99. I think I may be ordering that one very soon.
Finally I found this European Varian DVD listed on ebay last night...
The Julia Ormond Photo Selection is updated every month.
