2004 - News and Updates

14 December 2004

Both Jo and Lettie have found pictures at editorial.gettyimages.com (with big previews!) from the 27th Annual Kennedy Center Honors . Jo tells me that it is "not a charity thingie but a BIG thingie for the arts here in the USA. Four or five artists (music, dance, theater, film, etc) are selected each year for their lifetime contributions to their art. On the evening before the big gala affair at the Kennedy Center there's a big to-do at the State Department for the honorees and certain guests where the awards are actually presented. And Ms. Ormond did attend both events, thus, the different outfits.

Maybe. But I find it hard when reading the words "Julia Ormond" not to see the words "Adopt a Minefield" in my head.

PS Julia is looking a bit =ahem= healthy on top...

9 December 2004

Some sort of Kennedy Center Honors charity thing must have happened involving Elizabeth Taylor. Kim can't find wire photos of Julia, but two newspapers have noted her attendance. 'Elizabeth Taylor complimented Julia, saying she was "spunky" in her roles. Well, maybe she meant it as a compliment. American newspaper "The Baltimore Sun" mentioned that.' Lettie says there are new photos at getty images so maybe that's the same thing. Sorry that I have no other news, other than Nostradamus was on Irish TV during the last week. I got to see Julia try to hang herself again.

19 October 2004

Both Jo and Lettie have informed me that there are new pictures of Julia on Wireimage and Getty Images. It's some new charity minefield thingie. Julia is wearing a scarf on her head and is bump-less. Still no word on the gender of the former bump.

7 October 2004

Eszter found some pics and a short video interview with Julia on HBO's site about Iron Jawed Angels: www.hbo.com/films/ironjawedangels

A few people sent me this link a little while ago that mentions Julia: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/mid/3624350.stm

14 September 2004

Thanks to Estzer for finding this Gap ad featuring Julia showing off their maternity line!

13 September 2004

Jo found "a rather quirky website at www.integralnaked.org/integral.shtml that boasts lists of Featured Guests and Coming Attractions www.integralnaked.org/now.aspx. The lists include...wait...wait....drum roll...Julia Ormond!!

No date yet for her "appearance" but we Julia fans live in hope, don't we?! It has a nice little bio on her at www.integralnaked.org/contributor.aspx?id=50"

24 July 2004

Jo has informed me that the UK DVD release of Barber has been cancelled.

This page is moving. Yet again! I intend to host the pages at...

uk.geocities.com/jackelcheapo/juliaormond

So check it out and bookmark anything you find there. If you hear of any Julia news email me at the usual address.

13 July 2004

Jo has sent me scans of the "Woman's Day" interview:

page 1 page 2 page 3

11 July 2004

Jo got her hands on an Australian magazine called "Woman's Day" that has a two-page article about Julia. Here are a couple of quotes: What is it like to be staring your own family? "I was really dreading the moment when this thing would start moving in my belly because I'd go, 'Alien — aaargh!'" Does she think she'll continue work after the birth? "I don't envision myself ever not working — but I might just want to stay with the baby and say, 'Sod everything else.'" There were four photos of Julia in and about her home and another two of the home (a 1920's Spanish style). Many thanks to Jo for news in what is turning out to be another Julia-Drought.

20 June 2004

No Julia on the BBC this morning. Not even a mention of why she didn't appear. Instead we got to see Jacqueline Bisset. If I get any updates I'll post them here.

13 June 2004

Lettie sat up in shock when she heard an announcment on the BBC religious program The Heaven and Earth Show this morning. They are interviewing Julia Ormond on next week's show! it's usually on BBC1 at about 10-11 am on Sunday's, but check your listings. Here's the blurb from www.radiotimes.com:

The Heaven and Earth Show
Channel: BBC1
Date: Sunday 20 June
Time: 10:00am to 11:00am

Topical magazine programme dealing with the spiritual side of life, presented by Ross Kelly and Alice Beer. The celebrity guest is actress Julia Ormond, while Nina Wadia uncovers the soul of samba in her series on dance.

Jo found an autograph inscription that gives a peak into Julia's sense of humor at www.apeainthepod.com.

11 June 2004

I'm in the process of moving the movie and TV pages over to the new site.

Penny found the following in the New York Post and Lettie also found it in the National Enquirer as part of a larger article:

"Julia Ormond says that every role she's offered is 'the girlfriend who gets to take her clothes off on page three'."

Jo found this fan-listing site for Julia fans: elegance.asifall.net.

23 May 2004

Penny found an article about actresses playing Screen Goddess roles on the Daily Record newspaper site. Among the likes of Diane Kruger and Keira Knightley our Julia gets a mention...

Julia Ormond as Queen Guinevere First Knight (1996)

THE role of the young Queen who was beautiful enough to break the heart of a King and disrupt the most famous royal court in history, was always going to be hard to live up to.

And that's how it has proved for Julia Ormond since her part as Guinevere in First Knight.

After her stunning turn as the girl who married King Arthur, but had an affair with his trusted warrior Sir Lancelot, Ormond was tipped for great things but has largely disappeared from mainstream movies.

According to the Arthurian legend, the Queen was the most beautiful woman in England and like the best screen goddesses, was loved by every man who saw her.

14 May 2004

Penny tells me she stumbled on an infomercial for something called Wilson Pilates that featured none other than our Julia! She says it looks like it was done about 1 to 2 years ago and it has probably been around for a while.

Lettie told me that there were photos of ... Julia at wireimage. Jo found a couple of larger pictures and you can see them here and here.

28 April 2004

I've settled on the look of this front page (for the time being). I've also started uploading the photo galleries. The first gallery (magazines) is available. Please let me know if there are any dead links.

27 April 2004

No real progress made on the "move" to the address that you are presently at. It's a major job fixing up the mess I've made over the last 6+ years! Rest assured that I intend to retain all the "archives" and also restore the picture galleries to something that our Julia deserves. I've found some real gems hidden away on CD.

I'm trying out new "looks" for the front page. I'll probably change the images but things shoud look much as they do now.

Some news now! I looked on play.com this afternoon and discovered that Barber is due a region 2 DVD release in June followed by Iron Jawed Angels in September! All we need now is Resistance.

16 April 2004

Welcome to the new location for the page! There's nothing here yet. There are more than 400 files that I need to transfer and before I do that I'm going to have to do some serious work on them. I started the page back in 1997 (!) and things have got a bit disorganised over the years. When I do add files they will be to the general areas above.

11 April 2004

This page will be moving in the coming weeks to www.elcheapo.plus.com/juliaormond. There is nothing there yet but I will add a place-holder for you to bookmark. Don't be surprised if this page vanishes!

16 March 2004

Finally my IJA comments...

I'm glad I was warned about the lack of Julia because I'm sure I would have been disappointed by her absence. As it was I could get into the mind-set of "It's a Swank movie with a little bonus Julia". When Julia popped up it transformed the movie but then she was gone again.

I have no real problem with Swank but [and this is Jo's phrase] "a little of her goes a long way". It was very much "her" movie, although Francis O'Connor (I think it was) got a fair bit to do.

Here and there Julia got to do some acting, but hold-yer-horses! We're off to another Swank scene! I'm thinking of the "I'm tired" scene outside the train station. We got a just a glimpse of Julia doing her thing and then - oh wait... she's dead.

To be honest I though the movies wasn't too bad, although as always with historical movies I wonder how accurate it was to the sequence of events and so on.

Now, where is Resistance?

Here are Lettie's comments...

"I have just watched Iron Jawed Angels. Jack sent me my long awaited copy of it and it arrived today. I was not going to watch it until the weekend, but curiousity got the better of me and I sat down to two hours of Suffragist history. It is true that Julia Ormond had a very small part and it would have been nice had she had a bigger role. Her character, Inez Mulholland, is a very interesting historical figure in her own right and a film could be dedicated to her story alone. Julia Ormond would, of course, be perfect for the part again.

"As always, Julia played her role, albeit brief, extremely well. She outshone all the other female cast members in beauty and charm. She looked lovely in her period costumes. As her hair was cut very short in real life during the production of the film in the autumn of 2002 she was obviously wearing a wig for the role but it was nice to see her with long dark locks again even if it was not her own hair. (I wish she would grow her own hair long again and get rid of the fringe (bangs)) Her acting is extremely credible and the fate of her character and the way that Julia plays the role of her character has a big impact on the rest of the film.

"The star of the film is, of course, Hilary Swank and to be fair she plays her role well too. The film, itself, is well worth watching (even after the death of Julia Ormond's character) to discover the fate of the suffragette characters and their particular movement. Every woman should watch this film to remind themselves that universal suffrage was not always so and to remind themselves of the sacrifices and hardships that the suffragettes endured to secure the vote for future generations of their own sex. It deserves a cinematic release.

"My only criticism of the film is that it did not make enough use of its high quality cast. Julia Ormond was not the only cast member who suffered screen time economy. Patrick Dempsey and others did little better, however, the film is still worth watching."

Finally on a non-news note I popped my DVD of Traffik into my player the other night and watched the first episode again. It had been a while... Years in fact... Well worth another look if you have a copy. I'm looking forward to episode 2 and Julia's apperance.

11 March 2004

Michael: Please get in touch with Lettie using a different email address. Our replies to you get bounced back!

I've now seen IJA and I will post some comments in the next few days.

29 February 2004

Kim says "I was watching USA channel and saw a familiar face as I zoomed through the commercials with my TiVo. Our Julia has done a short segment, together with HBO's Cynthia Nixon, Chris Noth, (both of "Sex and the City") and Patrick Dempsey (also of "Iron Jawed Angels") encouraging people to vote. Julia looked lovely. It was just a neck up shot. Her face didn't have any ... fullness to it, but then the IJA premiere shots didn't show that either. The commercial promoted YouthVote.org."

20 February 2004

A big update today, so make sure you scroll down...

Jo found a bunch of IJA-related links...

  • iron-jawed-angels.com/news.htm

A great IJA webpage — quite extensive. It has a lot of links to other IJA-related stuff like photos, more photos, articles, more articles, and several interviews with Ms. Ormond.

Paul Fischer's "Julia Ormond's Angelic Return" for Film Monthly

The Fischer piece (the interview was done at Sundance) might even have an answer as to why Ms. Ormond would consider doing IJA in the first place! She says: "I love riding horses...so I'm always a sucker for a script that has got a horse in it." Asked about her hopes to direct, Ms. Ormond said that she's "definitely working towards that" but she wouldn't necessarily be the star because "I couldn't imagine working with a more difficult actress."

Michael Kilian's "Ormond Makes Her Mark on Hollywood as a Bona Fide Actress" for the Chicago Tribune

Joelle Klein's "Julia Ormond: Earth Angel" for Women.com "Good reading (if not entirely accurate — e.g., she has Ms. Ormond "involved with actor Jon Rubin")."

By the way, Jo liked it: "Unfortunately, Ms. Ormond's character was out of the picture half way through the movie. Nevertheless, I thought the movie was very much worth watching. It' was a good story, with great acting by all, wonderful direction, and a music score that's still tripping around in my head (a very modern and upbeat score, nothing like you'd expect for a period piece set in the early 1900s). "

Be sure to read the frame below. Mark was an extra on IJA and kindly sent this in...

Mari sent me this article...

LIFE - ARTS ETC.; TUNING IN TO TV; Pg. B06 By Christian Toto

Ormond's activism

Actress Julia Ormond loves combining work and pleasure, the latter meaning a healthy dollop of activism.

Her new film, HBO's "Iron-Jawed Angels," showcases the women's suffrage movement at the beginning of the 20th century.

"Actually getting out and using the fact that you're registered and voting is something that's hugely important," Miss Ormond told Associated Press Radio. "I hope that the movie really awakens people to the struggle that went on in order to get women to vote."

Miss Ormond was named a Star of Tomorrow in 1995 after her first three movies, "Legends of the Fall," "First Knight" and "Sabrina," drew plenty of media buzz. However, she said, she didn't want to wake up one day and regret her life, so she got involved in several causes, including the fight against AIDS in developing countries.

"It was overtaking my life; there was a point for me, waking up in a hotel in Prague going, 'I don't want to be 45 and this has been my life,' "said Miss Ormond, 39. "It made me think about what I was doing and try and strive to find more of a balance."

She also had more time on her hands when her red-hot career cooled down to a simmer.

"Iron-Jawed Angels," which also stars Hilary Swank and Frances O'Connor, follows a group of radical activists who broke from the mainstream women's suffrage movement to push even harder for women's voting rights in the early 1900s. Miss Ormond plays Inez Milholland, who suffered from anemia and died fighting for the cause.

The film premiered Sunday and repeats at 9 tonight on HBO.

Mari also sent me a transcript of the CNN interview and it'll get added eventually!

If anyone else sent me anything and I've missed it then I'm sorry. It's been a busy week!

Bridget Moynahan

No, this photo has nothing to do with Julia. I just really fancy Bridget Moynahan.

=sigh=

If you see her in a mag or something let me know. Mark your emails "Bridget!"

Jack =sighs= again.

Anyone watching The Dead Zone? It's dangerously close to being my favourite TV show at the moment.

16 February 2004

So we are now in a post-IJA world. I have not seen it yet. (A kind person will be sending me a tape.) Penny has submitted her own thoughts. I trust her opinion and she is as always worth reading...

"It's 10:30 and the film has been on for about an hour. Inez, Jules character, has just died and in a way I am relieved that I can turn the film off. Jules had in that hour about, well, 3 minutes, if that, of screen time. In short snipets. None lasting more than 40 to 45 seconds. If that. Inez was an important character but was just a quick blur in the film.

"I am so disappointed. I feel so bad. I don't know why she went about promoting the film, but I guess she did what she had to do. In one interview she does say that she wished she had more screen time. I wish she had some screen time. I sure that all the Ormond fans are as disappointed as I am.

"Oh by the way one scene she does a "Varian" and spits blood. She wears lots of hats. Oh well. Maybe next time.

"The bad reviews [online] were the only good reviews. Jules and many others were wasted and Swank is given way too much screen time. The film is a complete mishmosh. That bathtub scene with Swank was in my estimation an embarssment. If these were the women who secured the vote how in the hell did we ever get it? The credits should have read: Guest appearance by Julia Ormond."

So did you see IJA? What did you think? Send in your comments, long or short, and I'll post them here.

15 February 2004

Penny saw an interview with Julia on "The Novack Zone" on CNN. She may pop up here and there on US TV

Mari found some more IJA releated images. Go to www.lfi.co.uk, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on MORE. On the next page there should be a photo of Hilary Swank with Chad Lowe. Click on that and you'll find lots of pics of JO further down the page.

And a reminder that if you have HBO you should be watching tonight.

13 February 2004

Jo send me these two photos...

IJA premier Press Club

Mari found a whole bunch of IJA related photos at Getty Images. If the link stops working then just go to the gettyimages site and do an ormond search.

Mari also sent me the transcript of a Julia interview:

Julia Interview Transcript

12 February 2004

Typical. You wait two years for some news and it all happens at once! A few things to get through today...

  1. Penny informs me that People magazine has a color photo of Jules and that she did reveal at the premier that she is veddy ...!

  2. I did a Google news search today and there are a whole bunch of articles and reviews relating to IJA. I've included links to two of the articles below. The first is long and is well worth reading. If the link stops working let me know as I have kept a copy and will archive it on the page.

  3. Finally (for now!) Jo sent me this report...

"Just got through watching Hilary Swank speak at the National Press Club (luncheon) — televised on C-SPAN2. The topic was voter outreach and, of course, with IJA making the rounds, Ms. Swank was invited to be the guest speaker. She brought a guest—Ms. Ormond, who sat on the dais with her and a bunch of other people, some IJA connected, some not. During the question session following Ms. Swank's speech, Ms. Swank was asked what she thought about women trying to have a family life and professional life, too. Ms. Swank commented that she thought women were uniquely suited to having both — natural multitaskers and all that — then she mentioned that she new several women who had both. She mentioned Katja Von Garnier (director of IJA) who directed scenes while carrying her baby around on her hip. Then, looking over at her guest, stated "...and Julia Ormond is ..." So, I guess whatever Todd was reading is 100% accurate!!"

11 February 2004

Todd got in touch yesterday and said "Apparently Julia Ormond was here in New York promotong Iron Jawed Angels. I know this b/c she got a nice big color picture in the NY Post today. What a pleasant surprise!". Then Jo let me know that wireimage has added a bunch of Julia pictures from the premier. I assume they are the same as on the NYPost. Here's one thumbnail:

That's all old news because today Todd tells me "Just thought you should know that ... Where would I be without that newspaper?!"

Yikes! Todd wins this year's no-prize for being the first to tell me. Lets all keep our eyes open for any confirmation of this in the media. Some of you with magnifying glasses may want to examine the wireimage pictures more closely.

PS Captives was on late on the BBC at the weekend. I saw a little bit at the start and our Julia was looking smashing.

9 February 2004

Kim reminds me that IJA will be on HBO in the US on February 15. See the HBO website for details. So you have no excuse!

23 January 2004

Jo found a very positive review of IJA and I've included the text below.

www.filmmonthly.com/Behind/Articles/Sundance2004/Sundance2004.html

I had serious misgivings about the HBO drama Iron Jawed Angels, but they were rapidly quashed within the first five minutes. The film chronicles the rise of the suffragette movement and the tale of Alice Paul [Hilary Swank] and her unwavering determination to change the U.S constitution enabling all women to have the right to vote, hampered under the presidency of Woodrow Wilson. Directed with a visual flair and style by Katier von Garnier, Iron Jawed Angels depicts this historical series of events, with a surprising modernity. Visually stunning and cinematically breathtaking, Hilary Swank finally gets a screen role that justifies her Boys Don't Cry Oscar. But she is well supported by a luminous Frances O'Connor as the irreverent Lucy Burns and the glorious Julia Ormond as the ultimate symbol for the Suffragette movement. The film's standing ovation was justified, as the film is powerful, insightful, and even cheekily funny, in this depiction of an extraordinary struggle. Outside of the U.S, Iron Jawed Angels deserves a theatrical release, for it is truly a magnificent work.

Penny found a mention of Julia at the (wait for it) Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum.

19 January 2004

The Iron Jaw thingie is getting closer. Lettie told me she found a bunch of new photos on wireimage of Julia at the Sundance festival. And Milka was kind enough to send me the 10 photos found online. Here they are...

Sundance 1 Sundance 2 Sundance 3 Sundance 4 Sundance 5 Sundance 6 Sundance 7 Sundance 8 Sundance 9 Sundance 10

Penny had this to say about the Iron Jaw previews...

Saw a bit more of the preview of Iron Jawed Angels and I gotta tell ya that Jules looks lovely. She is the films "residential beauty." Of course Swank has the real meaty part but at least we get Jules in the role she seems to enjoy the most---standing up for a cause. This looks like a real meaty part for her. It is a good film for all involved. The story looks exciting and has a really great cast. I am seeing more of Jules in the previews and can't wait till 2/15 to actually see the whole film. P.S. Jules US accent sounds a wee bit too "posh." She is very tight jawed and her US-ness doesn't flow. Sorta like Madonna doing Brit.

I also just found this link... http://iron-jawed-angels.com/castphotos_julia.htm

On another note, last night I saw an online ad for Traffic - The Mini-series. It turns out that there is a new three part series inspired by the Zeta movie. So we have a mini-series based on a movie based on Julia's 1989 mini-series. I can't tell you much about it except that I noticed Mary McCormack's name was in the cast list. "Who's she?" I hear you ask. I remember her in the TV series Murder One as the Good Looking Lawyer Chick. Later on she was in Deep Impact as the Good Looking Astronaut Chick. So now you know. Always liked her.

11 January 2004

Jo has just sent me these photos from a Press Tour (8 Jan 2004).
