THE BREEDING PROCESS

In the hands of inexperienced people, beware all those thinking of breeding Chihuahuas. even the person who has bred before will always encounter a new emergency. the brood bitch will under the influence of a hormone known as luteinizing hormone (L.h.) will disperse an unknown number of follicles in her system to release her eggs into the uterine tube at each heat period .this is called ovulation. In this time around 9th to 14th day of her season she is most willing to be mated ,the ova are released in an immature state maturing in four to five days within her oviduct only then are they ready to be fertilized by the dogs sperm .there for depends on active sperm meeting the eggs at just the right time this is why two mating 48 hours apart give the optimum chance of fertilized eggs fortunately sperm from a healthy stud will live in her reproductive tract for up to 7 even 8 days ,so even mated early will stand a good chance of the sperm being viable .

If more one sperm fertilizes the egg the embryo will be deformed and will normally die before whelping , after fertilization there are two nuclei in each egg envelope one from the sire one from the dam .Each carries half the chromosomes of the parents when these two fuse the entirety of the inherited genes from parents will be set at 20 days after mating the embryo begins to change and will attach itself to the uterine horns to grow and change the following two weeks are probably the most vital time for the progress of the litter the body organs and limbs are now being formed the embryo is very susceptible to events that happen to the bitch. Injections or over heating ,medication or accident will affect the development will cause deformities such as cleft palates single eyes undeveloped limbs etc. The foetus is one to two inches long at this time foetus can be re..absorbed by the bitch never knowing what might have been .so many things can go wrong many disappointments the stud is blamed, the female is not fertile ,but at the end of 63 days if you have live healthy puppies what a joy to behold .

THE SIGNS OF A PREGNANT FEMALE ARE USUALLY HIDDEN

UNTIL MUCH LATER IN HER CONFINEMENT .

for just a few days around 3/4 weeks into her term

it may be possible to have a scan to see the marble -size foetus units

strung out like a necklace of pearls .in larger bodied females it is not always possible .

once fluids have accumulated in the foetal sacks held in their double walled membrane

it is difficult to identify the units until much later in the pregnancy .since the tiny foetus

are at such a critical stage at about 24/35 days of pregnancy

it is extremely unwise to let anyone feel for the units ,the female will show very few signs of her pregnancy until about 35 days some changes may be noticed .

The pink colour of the teats deepen, due to increased blood supply and become enlarged ,the mammary glands enlarge ,from the 35th day there could be a white discharge (mucus) a fairly reliable indication of pregnancy. from the vagina.any blood should be reported to your vet. some bitches have morning sickness frothy liquid .she may refuse food until later in the day ,little and often meals is best at this time .by the 6th week her food intake should be increased to maybe four or five times of good nutritional intake .puppies may be seen on x-ray from 45/50 days of pregnancy, recently a new test from a blood sample taken 28/37 days into pregnancy under good clinical health environment can detect a positive result .

as whelping draws near at about 9 weeks or 63 days the pups should be able to be seen moving about ,the female can grow very heavy one sometimes wonder how they can hold the weight ,she will become secretive and want to find a place for her babies to be born .she will want to be away from people and other animals ,don't upset her by wanting too many strangers about .just make sure you have your vets phone number in case you need him. common sense should prevail . we have mostly known what a birth is like the pit falls and complications .

HE WILL ALSO MAKE TOILET MISTAKES LITTLE PUDDLES AND LITTLE PACKETS OF WASTE .HE WILL NEED TRAINING WITH LOVE AND PATIENCE .

A PUPPY WILL NEED HIS OWN SPECIAL PLACE TO SLEEP A NICE COSY WARM BED A MICRO WAVE DISC IS GOOD FOR WARMTH ,HIS HABITS WILL START TO IMMERGE AS TIME GOES BY SO TRAIN HIM WELL WITH KINDNESS .

CHILDREN NEED TO BE SUPERVISED AS HE WILL GET TIRED AFTER A PLAY AND FEED ,NO PICKING UP BY HIS NECK ,LEFT ON FURNITURE, DRAGGED ABOUT LIKE A TOY. CHIHUAHUA PUPPIES ARE TINY VULNERABLE. BABIES SO CARE IS NEEDED .THEY ARE INQUISITIVE.

A LOVELY BED FOR PEACHES

INTRODUCE HIM GRADUALLY TO CROWDS AND TRAFFIC BY CARRYING HIM UNTIL HE FEELS MORE CONFIDENT.

AFTER INJECTIONS .. 11 DAYS USUALLY THE BEST TIME TO LET HIM MIX WITH OTHER DOGS MICRO CHIPPING AFTER 4 MONTHS AS IT IS A BIG NEEDLE FOR A LITTLE BODY.

ENSURE YOUR GARDEN IS SAFE ENTIRELY CLOSED IN AND FREE OF DANGEROUS PLANTS (SEE ABOUT THE BREED PAGE) DON'T LEAVE SMALL OBJECTS FOR HIM TO SWALLOW PLASTIC BAGS ARE A PARTICULAR HAZARD CAN CHOKE OR SUFFOCATE ON THEM.

puppies have endless energy probably matched by endless appetite.

puppies grow faster than humans 12 times faster in fact .just like human babies puppies need a specific diet with vitamins and minerals

protein calcium phosphorus ,so choose your food wisely it takes 9 to 12 months for a chi., puppy to become a mature adult ,but growing should even out about 6 months. feed little and often .

3 months / 4 meals a day .3 to 5 months / 3 meals a day

5 months to 12 months / 2 meals a day.

12 months on / 1to 2 meals day.

milk is not needed after weaning clean fresh water is ideal ,milk can in large quantities cause diarrhoea .

A BREEDER'S TALE.

I love my little puppy, he makes my house a home,
He always is my best friend, I never feel alone.
He makes me smile, he makes me laugh, he fills my heart with love,
Did some breeder breed him? Was he sent from heaven above?

I've never been a breeder, or seen life through their eyes
I hold my little puppy, just sit and criticise.
I've never know their anguish, I've never felt their pain,
The caring of their charges, through snow or wind or rain.

I've never waited all night long for puppies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by dawn.....
I've never felt the heartache of a little life in my hands,
A darling little puppy who weighs just 60 grams !!

Should you do this instead of that? Or just pray to God?
Alone you fight, and hope one day he'll grow into a dog.
Bring joy to another being and make a house a home.
You know it's all just up to you, you fight this fight alone.

Formula, bottle, heating pads you've got to get this right,
Two hourly feeds for this little mite throughout the day and night.
In your heart you know it, you'll surely lose the fight
To save this little baby, but God willing, you just might....

Day one he's in there fighting, you say a silent prayer,
Day two and three he's doing well, with lots of loving care
Day four and five - he's still alive your hopes soar to the heavens!
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands day seven.

You take this little angel and bury him alone,
With aching heart and burning tears, (and an exhausted groan),
You ask yourself, Why do this? Why suffer all the pain?
But see the joy that puppies bring - it really self explains!

So, when you think of breeders and label them with "greed"
Think what they sometimes endure to fill another's need
And when you buy a puppy, with pounds and pence you part.
You only pay with money........

We pay with our hearts.
