Officers' bar on the Diomed. The Chief Engineer has his pre-lunch appetiser.

This was a late embellishment. All the ships used to carry passengers but, by the sixties, traffic was declining as air travel began to bite, so a programme of de-passengerisation was implemented. A by-product of that was that an officers' bar was built in what used to be the passengers' lounge. Previously, a bell push in the alleyway had summoned a steward to bring the grog to whoever's room was being used at the time, although on the older ships everybody would have gathered on No. 4 hatch.
