When Piers Smith-Cresswell transcribed his grandfather's diary of a voyage he undertook in 1907/8 from Santa Rosalia (in Baja California, Mexico) to Cardiff via Portland Oregon on board the 4-masted Russell-built barque CLAN BUCHANAN, Captain Peter Thompson, he had to make a few guesses.
