Chippies making schidt chutes - or should that be sh*t chutes. Either way I never heard them called anything else whilst I was at sea. They were a vital piece of equipment to prevent raw sewage from being deposited on the wharf when alongside, or on an unsuspecting boat when out in the stream.

A similar problem arose when referring to certain scavenging birds that were common out East. One young first tripper used the normal maritime term for them when describing them to his parents. Seeing that they were a bit taken aback at his language he quick wittedly explained that it was a Dutch term, spelled "Suyt hawks".
