We were anchored in the middle of the bay off Bohayan Island in North Borneo, so whereas our kids might have jumped on to their bikes after school to go to have a look at a visiting ship, these boys jumped into their canoes. They augmented their pocket money somewhat by diving for the coins that the crew tossed into the water. (There is a picture of a race for a coin in the Ships of the Sixties section).
And it was not just the boys. The girls in the lower picture, taken in Bugo, Mindanao, Phillipines, augmented their pocket money in the same way. Clothes dry quickly in that climate.
