The Ajax had wooden sheathed well decks so as to provide insulation to the tween decks when pilgrims were living in them. They took a bit of a battering when handling general cargo over them so they had to be repaired periodically. This was done by a gang of shore carpenters in Hong Kong. How they avoided removing the odd toe when handling an adze at high speed was a mystery to us.
