Line ashore in Keppel harbour, Singapore. There wasn't much room between ships so we lay off the berth whilst the Harbour Board boys rowed out to make fast messengers to the eye of the head and sternropes. They rowed back, paying the messenger out as they did so. The lads on the quay then hauled the messenger in, bringing the eye of the rope with it. Then it was 'heave easy' at both ends and the ship slid in to her berth.
