The M class ships were the last of the classic post war design, built in the late 50s/early 60s, and the first to have airconditioning in the public rooms - saloon, passenger's lounge, smoke room etc. It wasn't very good - one of our passengers used to smoke cigars in the lounge and the smell used to be recirculated into the dining saloon - but it was a start. The Priam class, which followed, were a brief new concept before the container ships took over.
