Overtaking in the Abu Ail channel, in the southern Red Sea. Looks like a Niarchos tanker. We were probably doing a couple of knots more than her so it would take a wee while to get past. If there was no other traffic about we might have a word with the mate on watch via the Aldis lamp. The usual opening gambit on the lamp would be 'What ship? Where bound?', although naval ships, who seemed to like to keep their signallers occupied by calling up every ship they saw, occasionally varied it to something like 'What ship? Whence? and whither?'
