. . and has a wealth of other attractions to suit all tastes; not least the Cornish Coastal Path, together with wonderful country pubs and restaurants, and of course MOUNT EDGCUMBE HOUSE built by Sir Richard Edgcumbe of Cotehele between 1547-53 and set within its 865 acres of Country Park. Also, on the outskirts of Torpoint is ANTONY HOUSE, built between 1711-1721 for Sir William Carew with its superb 25 acre landscaped garden containing many species of indigenous and exotic trees and a collection of camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias and other flowering shrubs. This beautiful location, courtesy of the estate, being the venue for our Lions Club's annual Antony House Fair.
In 1939 the naval shore establishment of H.M.S. RALEIGH was established here in Torpoint, to provide training for new entrants to the Royal Navy. The base also houses the Royal Naval Supply School, Royal Naval Submarine School, Royal Naval Seamanship School, schools for Firefighting, Nuclear Biological and Chemical Defence, Military and First Aid Training and, is home to the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Plymouth.
