The Business Meeting of the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club was held at the Comrades Club on 1st November 2011.

Details of the Santa Sleigh routes and venues were agreed, and a detailed list may be accessed from this site

I am pleased to report that all the SW Lions Clubs, including Torpoint and Rame Peninsula, sent a combined cheque for £42,650 to the
Lions Den at CHSW, Little Harbour in Cornwall.  There was a matching Grant from Lions Club International Foundation and the General Public.

TORPOINT STUDENT ADVANCES IN LIONS INTERNATIONAL PEACE POSTER COMPETITION
Rachael Hope, 11, a pupil at Carbeile Junior School, has won the local competition sponsored by Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club.  The competition, which emphasizes the importance of world peace to young people everywhere, was judged by Sara McLees-Taylor of Westcroft Gallery, Kingsand, who selected it for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Children Know Peace".  Rachael's poster will advance to stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of the competition.

We are also hoping to have a Lions Young Ambassador for the Club.  I understand we have 3 possible contenders in the area. We await the outcome with interest.

Our sponsored football team Torpoint Athletic beat Newquay Godolphin Atlantic 6-1 at Newquay on Sunday 20th November and they now progress to the District Semi-Final at Home to Newquay
. Well played Torpoint.

Our Three Choir Concert raised a record £1,134.41 and the Club agreed to round this up to £1,200.00 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Club has sent 3 of our Lions on Traffic Management Courses with some financial help from Torpoint Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce.  This will help the Club to complete Traffic Management Plans for any events impinging on Public Roads to comply with new rules.

It has also been agreed that the Club can put up a Lions sign to be sited on the Harvey Street garden in Torpoint.  The sign will share the posts holding the town's twinning sign.  This is something the local Lions have tried to get agreed for a number of years.  The Club will also tend to the gardens surrounding the sign.  The team leader for this project will be Lion Marianne Wootton, one of our new Lions.

The
Annual New Year's Day Dip will take place in Kingsand/Cawsand starting at 11.45 on 1st January 2012.  Dippers please register at Kingsand Community Hall between 10.00 and 11.30 hrs.  Judging will be carried out by Local MP Sheryll Murray and Lion President Barbara Hambly and photo shoots will commence at 11.45.  The Parade to Cawsand beach will start at 12.15 pm.  The Dip will begin at 12.30 pm.  The starter for the event will be Local MP Sheryll Murray. There are 10 trophies to be won by the dippers - 5 for Fancy Dress and 5 for Sponsorship:

1.  Best Individual Fancy Dress
2.  Best Non-Pub Team Fancy Dress
3.  Best Pub Team Fancy Dress

Finally you are probably aware that Lions Clubs International supports a Blindness Programme worldwide and were in fact responsible for the introduction of the "White Stick" used by Blind people.  At our last meeting to make members aware of what blindness is like our President arranged a small programme of Lions being blindfolded then taken round the hall by a Lion partner, then eating fruit fed to them by their partner. Quite an interesting and profound exercise.  Try it sometime!

Any volunteers wishing to help out on Santa Sleigh runs please contact Lion Rob Gibson (Tel: 01752 822813).

The Lions 'Eller' Road Race will take place again in 2012.  More about this event next year.

Further details of all our forthcoming events are, or will be, listed on the Events Diary page, as they become available -
