Home > Achievements My Achievements
This page is dedicated to my life achievements of which I am most proud. Sadly in October 2003, I fell seriously ill with M.E.; rendering me completely bed-bound for almost a year. Over two years later, my health had improved sufficiently to allow me to study part time with the Open University and volunteer with the Sheffield M.E. Group. I now hope that these activities will help me to rehabilitate myself with a view to eventually rejoining the working community. Learning to manage; and hopefully to overcome this illness has been my greatest challenge to date. Since falling ill, I have had several articles published in the Sheffield M.E. Group's newsletter. However, the article of which I am most proud was published in the nationally distributed 'Interaction' magazine. Published by a large charity called Action for M.E., this magazine offers support and information for people affected by the illness. My article centred on my illness and all the things that I have done to try to improve my situation. I hoped that it would offer hope of recovery to people as severely ill as I once was. Please view my article as it was printed in the magazine (available as a pdf - 41KB). On 5th October 2002, I abseiled down the east facing wall of the Sheffield City Centre Library. The event in aid of the Marie Curie cancer charity raised over £140. I was awarded the Sir Christopher Hatton Art and Design Prize on 10th July 1997 for a painting that I submitted as my A-Level exam-piece. I received a prize of £75 for this honour. Between August 1995 and June 1996, I completed three outdoor activity courses at the Outdoor Education Centre in Longtown, Wales. These courses comprised team building activities such as canoeing, abseiling, rock climbing, caving, mountain biking, forest orienteering and bivouacking. In 1995 I participated in a production of Guys and Dolls with the Wellingborough Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. This was quite a large commitment; requiring at least one night per week for almost a year. In the weeks preceding the performances (seven in total), I was required to attend rehearsals almost every night after school. I found taking a part in this musical a very rewarding experience. In October 1990, I moved to a city called North Canton in Ohio USA with my family. In the three years that I lived there I adjusted to their way of life, visiting the vast majority of states and capital cities. The whole experience considerably broadened my horizons. Overall, this has given me the confidence to enjoy visiting foreign places and cope with unpredictable situations. While there, I became a member of my school's Track and Field Team. I won various prizes for both long and short distance running in competition with other schools in the state of Ohio. Upon our return to England, I had to re-adjust and catch up with my academic work. |
