My Studies with the University of Sheffield

In September 1997, I moved from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire to Sheffield to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.

Studying at University considerably improved my ability to work unsupervised, both alone and within a team to meet deadlines. In my first year of study I became the elected 'Course Representative.' This post provided me with invaluable experience of attending meetings, and effectively communicating and negotiating with my superiors.

Not possessing an A-Level in Physics, I was required by Sheffield University to take an Engineering Foundation Year. I was then able to progress to the first year of the Mechanical Engineering Degree. Being one of England's top Universities in the field of Mechanical Engineering, an extra year of study was a sacrifice I was willing to make.

Topics covered in the Foundation Year:

  • Mathematics
  • Applied dynamics
  • Statics
  • Engineering science

Topics covered in the Mechanical Engineering Degree:

  • Mathematics
  • Applied dynamics
  • Mechanics of fluids
  • Mechanics of solids
  • Applied thermodynamics
  • Mechanical behaviour of materials
  • Electrical and electronic engineering
  • Basic training in welding
