Dojo Kun
From R Watt

Every line begins with a counter (stots) that means “one”. Every line ends with the word koto, which literally means “thing”. This is generally interpreted to mean, “Here's a rule, here's another rule...” - all of equal importance:

  1. Stots: Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto [ “Strive for completion of character”]
  2. Stots: Makoto no michi wo mamoru koto [“ “Protect the way of the truth”]
  3. Stots: Doryoko no seishin wo yashinau koto [“Foster the spirit of effort”]
  4. Stots: Reigi wo omanzuru koto [“Respect the principles of etiquette”]
  5. Stots: Kekki no yu wo imashimuru koto [“Guard against impetuous courage”]

The common interpretation to English

Seek Perfection of Character

Sincerity [Truth]

Endeavour [Effort]

Respect Others [Etiquette]

Refrain from violent behaviour [Self control]
