The World Championships took place this year in Bergamo, Italy. The Championships were well represented from all over the world with 40 Federations represented from as far a field as Australia, Argentina, South Africa and of course a large contingent from the host nation Italy.
National Karate Federation, Scotland took over a small squad taking part in both kata and kumite. The male kata competitor Grant Conroy did very well against a strong field but was beaten to the gold by a very delighted member of the host nation.
The only female competitor from Scotland, Vivienne Milne went on to lift a Gold Medal in senior ladies kata, a fantastic achievement for her and her Federation. Vivienne has trained for over 15 years with her Instructor Ronnie Watt 8th Dan Director for Shotokan for the WKC and was recently awarded her 3rd Dan by Dr Fritz Wendland WKC Founding President and Dusan Dacic 7th Dan form the Serbian Karate Union when they visited Scotland in the spring. Vivienne has competed at almost all WKC Championships since 2000 winning several Bronze medals over the years, however a year of preparation and hard work has certainly paid off in her first ever Gold Medal – congratulations Vivienne!
