Camping de La Foret---- Second report

Date of visits: June 2006 & June 2007
Directions:
This charming little site is West of Rouen in the area where the River Seine winds round in a large “U”. We were on our way South and this was a convenient stopover on our way.
Camping La Foret has 88 touring pitches and the remainder are static holiday homes. Some of the pitches are a little tight for large outfits as the road is a single track round which makes reversing on awkward unless you have a mover.
The toilet block is extremely clean and heated. There is a small shop in reception. There are also laundry facilities along with a television room, and a motor home service point. Groceries are available in high season. Other on site facilities includes a heated pool and paddling pool. One access road serves the site and the hedged pitches are fairly level.
The village is a 500 metre walk and there are bars and shops here. Our itinerary meant we did not have time to research but a short drive round the surrounding area showed it to be very pretty and Rouen itself is not far away. I sat and watched some large ships on the Seine. Camping cheques are accepted.
We returned to this site in June 2007 on our way North from Saumur. We found it just as nice as our first visit although I would reiterate the tight pitches as we allocated one which I just could not turn down without un-hitching and pushing and I just do not “do” pushing! This year we walked into Jumieges and found a lovely restaurant.

We spent our first site 2 nights was Camping du Foret at Jumiege (nr Rouen). It's ok for stop over, facilities cleaner than I have at home, shop stocked virtually nothing, pool good but outdoor and indoor play areas were very limited.
Pitches were nicely hedged around and quite private, although I prefer to be a bit more exposed and able to chat
to neighbours!!
We had the best moment of the holiday when we went to Rouen. We took the horse drawn tour and it was fab, especially
when the driver geed up the horses as we went through the narrow winding lanes in the park...I really thought they were out of control!

In June 2000 we stopped for few days at a site near Dieppe on our way to the west coast. We had previously stayed there for a couple of weeks in Sep 97 and the site hadn't changed at all.
They had a tennis court and very good toilet blocks. The pitches had their own water supply and waste and 16amp elec hook-ups. The site also has an incredibly large building for its barbeque.
We love the area and as with all of our French trips the weather seemed to be on our side. The beach at St Martins is very much like the rugged beaches around Dover.
Dieppe and neighbouring Treport with its great harbour offer a variety of interesting places to see and things to do. I often wonder why we have to travel further south.
If you want the flavour of France without having to travel miles and miles then this is a good location with plenty of history.

Camping Les Mouettes
Gem of a site with a very impressive reception with no English spoken.
Watch out for the long lunch break as the reception is closed from 12 noon to 3pm.
Before reaching the barrier there is a late arrival area with individual gravel pitches and a single water point. The touring area is well laid out and there are plenty of water taps and dustbins.
The facilities building was in the centre of the site and of a high standard with plenty of hot showers, toilets, private
washrooms, washing-up sinks and laundry room.
There is an enclosed children's playground on sand and a building with slot machines, table tennis, pool table etc. The shop was in the same block but my knowledge of the french language let me down here, I think it said ''if you want anything
from the shop, ask at the reception''.
Mostly French and Dutch people on this site - I think we were the only Brits.
Although the hook-up points are three-pin the poles were reversed (the only adaptor I didn't have so the screwdriver had to come out unfortunately).
There is a path opposite the camp which leads to a British Memorial and in the corner of the same field is a narrow but steep path leading to the stony beach and to the children's free freshwater pool and playground on the boardwalk.
The price for one night was about £9 inc 10 amp electric. I would definately return to this site but would only accept pitches numbered from 1-59 as I would not want to be among the permanents. If you are towing a large caravan, check your access to the pitch before heading for it.

This is a handy stop over point with easy access off the A28
This campsite is handy as a stop off point close to the new A28 Autoroute. The site is located betwixt an industrial estate and housing. Mind you apart from a local football match it was quite peaceful.
The pitches are of reasonable size and are offset from the site roads, I suspect in an effort to make reversing in slightly easier from the narrow site roads. All except the tent pitches are hedged so there is a good degree of privacy. Water and electrics are handy to all pitches except those which I assume are designed for tents.
There is an excellent toilet block which is kept clean. The toilets are mainly of the English type. Whilst they do not have seats they are interesting shaped which makes this not so important. There is toilet paper to each cubicle. There is some local information in reception.
A bread man visits the site each morning. This is not a large site with perhaps 60 pitches. There are a couple of mobile homes and a handful of permanent vans.
When we arrived, with another couple closely behind, the site was only about 10% full. During the evening more units arrived so its difficult to tell what it would be like in the main season. At around £12 a night its not the cheapest Municipal I have stayed on but not too bad.
The centre of town of Bernay is walk able but not that close.

Two minutes walk from the town centre.
Large pitches, half grass, half concrete, hedge surround. Beautiful setting and very quiet site.
Brilliant site, we were gob-smacked when we saw it. Only trouble was as we staying only one night. We were expected to keep our car in the site so they didn't offer us an entry card for the gate.
They insist on helping to push the caravans into place so that no damage is done. Napoleon, the camp commandant was quite
upset when I started to reverse the caravan into position. Then I upset him again by setting his guard dogs barking while I was exploring the site.
The town is excellent, and has all you need to stock up and plenty of places to eat out.
We were the only Brits on the site and the staff spoke no English, so have your phrase book ready. Shame about the run in with Bonaparte, he didn't even wave bye-bye to us but it would not stop us from returning. We highly recommend this site.

Lovely site, English speaking owners. Lots of static/chalet type homes and touring vans there for the season.
Pitch size seems to vary – we got a large pitch when she saw the size of our caravan. Flat pitches, surrounded by highish hedges. Nice clean toilet block – didn’t use the showers as we always tend to us our own facilities.
Bar/snack bar, swimming pool, didn’t use that either – much too cold and it was pouring with rain! Little shop with staples like bread and wine! Bike hire too. Small children’s playground, table tennis table, boules pitch. 20 Euros deposit for entry card for electronic barrier.
We used ASCI card here – and paid 13.50 Euros + 1 Euro to upgrade the 6amps to 8amps.
Only stayed 2 nights as we were travelling south.
Visited Honfleur – beautiful port, lots to see – with trips up the river to view the Pont de Normandie from below!

The site is situated 500m from the RD143. It can be a bit of a run to get here as I am not certain if caravans are taken on the ferries across the Seine and they do not seem to run to a schedule! From the A13 motorway: exit at junction 25, then follow D913 & D490. After crossing the Pont de Brotonne turn right on D982 to Yainville And D143 to Jumieges. From the A29 motorway: exit at the junction for Yvetot, then towards the Brotonne bridge. Before the bridge, follow direction Trait, then Jumièges as above. From Rouen: Follow direction Duclair, then Jumièges.
It is a quiet rural place. Although only a night halt on this occasion it was so peaceful we both said it was the sort of place we could stay a few days.

It's a well laid out site with the usual mixture of statics and touring pitches. Its not a big site and if you are in the right spot you can just see the sea.

The flat grass pitches are very large and divided by low hedges but there is one entrance to four pitches and from a narrow path it can be difficult to manoeuvre into it.
Beyond the ablutions block was an area of permanently sited touring caravans, some looking a little past their sell-by date. I only saw one chemical disposal point on the site.
The walk into the village is very steep but worth the hard climb home. The river passes through the alleyways through the village and is very attractive.

The site is well signed off the N138 Bernay bypass. Look also for France Parc Exposition.
There is an Intermarche on the road that runs around the back of the Gare SNCF, cheapest fuel of the holiday!
