Members of CHMAS have been on many treks to see astronomical events, often organised by Explorers Tours. The most notable trips are as follows:

AURORA BOREALIS

  • In March 1999 two members of the Society, Rita Whiting and Val Stoneham, joined an Explorers  trip to Alaska to see the aurora.  Click here to see just four of the many stunning pictures they took in the Gallery.

  • In March 2000, Jean and Brian Felles along with Terry Miles and Chris Wallace also went to Alaska with Explorers.  Click here to see a further nine stunning aurora photos from Jean and Brian.

METEORS

  • A number of Society Members were able to take advantage of the 2001 Leonid Storm by visiting the island of Palau in Micronesia in the Pacific. From there, Jean and Brian Felles were able to take these stunning shots.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES

  • Since the famous total solar eclipse expedition in 1973 on the 'Monte Umbi' off the coast of Mauritania, many Society members have undertaken long trips to see this remarkable phenomenon. So far members have seen 13 total eclipses, and more are planned.   To see our members' superb photographs please click here.
