Concentrate!
A difficulty with concentration is one of the many symptoms people with MS may experience. For some it is barely noticeable and for others it can cause problems with normal, everyday activities. As is often the case with Multiple Sclerosis, the 'unseen' or invisible nature of difficulties with concentration may cause problems with friends, family or work colleagues who can feel that a lack of attention is a deliberate decision to ignore them. Many people with MS have said they become mentally fatigued when making a particular effort to concentrate on a task. In some cases it requires little more than “an extra effort” whilst for others concentrating on the task can become almost impossible. To minimise any difficulties with concentration there are a number of tricks or strategies that can help. Try to ensure that where you are working is distraction free and that you have all the physical requirements you need (e.g. comfortable chair, desk, pens, notebook, dictionary etc) Also, the environment where you are working should be conducive to completing the task at hand, for example a comfortable temperature and suitable lighting. |
Being clear and realistic about what you hope to achieve from the task at hand will help. It is a good idea to decide the order in which you will complete tasks and possibly plan a small reward. Ultimately each individual will best know themselves what works for them. Remember, if you are experiencing problems concentrating it may be unrelated to Multiple Sclerosis! |
