Branch History

In 1997 a small group of dedicated people took the first tentative steps in formulating a local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society in the Newry and Mourne area. Their initial aim was to secure premises that would act as a base for members, families, carers and friends who wished to avail of our voluntary services. The need for a local advice centre was recognised and our priorities were directed towards fundraising and promoting awareness locally. After an extensive prolonged search a small terraced house was leased at a price that suited our developing branch. The official opening took place at Easter 2001.

For a period of two years the centre opened as often as possible by members who manned the office on a voluntary basis. The need for regular opening hours became apparent in order to provide the necessary service to people with MS in the Newry and Mourne area. The committee agreed that the way forward was to appoint a Branch Coordinator. This person would take charge of the many varied aspects associated with running the branch, such as ensuring regular opening hours. This resulted in the appointment of Susan Carey to the post of Branch Coordinator in January 2003. This significant step forward was seen as a necessary progression to meet the increasing need for practical information, support and advice for people with MS. In December of that same year we were able to move our office, across the road, to Ballybot House. The official opening took place on the 16th December 2003 in the company of Jackie Patterson, the then Mayor of Newry & Mourne. Susan now works in the branch office which is open Monday to Friday 11.00am to 3.00pm. Everyone is welcome to call in for information, help and advice.
