Another unique product from Japan. Fahrenex is pre-ground to an espresso grind and simulates the coffee puck almost perfectly. Simply place about 8g in a single portafilter (the amount doesn't have to be exact), tamp as usual and pull a shot into a 1oz shot glass. The temperature “fixes” the Fahrenex colour (a shade of red) after about 10 seconds of the pour. Using the glass dish provided  place at least 10ml of the liquid from the shot glass into the dish and place on the sensor (this can be done up to 30 minutes after pulling the shot). Within a few seconds a temperature reading will show on the display. Accuracy of this unit is 0.01% and is a true alternative to the Scace device at a fraction of the price. It has the added advantage of working on any coffee maker capable of using espresso coffee.
