Investment in equipment is of course important. Winning at a World Class level requires equipment that is as good as or better than the opposition. However in one class design racing equipment differences will only make a very small gain to overall speed. What matters much more is how you get around the course - and this will only improve through coaching and practice.
Coaches have made a significant difference to my racing. Off water Phil Warner helped ensured I approached regattas fully prepared and with the right mind frame. My on-water techniques, starts, base boat speed, mark rounding and positioning, benefited most from the days and days of work put in with Julian Pearson. I have also worked with a number of RYA appointed coaches looking at boat set-up and equipment, boat speed, upwind and downwind sailing technique, strategy and tactics.
George Barker is RYA Sailability's racing coach and should be the first point of contact for those starting out. Email George and tell him I sent you.
The RYA's current coach for the Skud 18 is Harvey Hillary. Harvey has campaigned a 49ner for the Olympics and has since become one of the RYA's ellite coaches.
