| Location. North Colchester is the area most convenient for the railway station, general Hospital, A12 to Ipswich and A120 or A133 to the coast. The area has local employment opportunities at Several Business Park and the General Hospital. West Colchester is the area most convenient for the A12 to London, A120 to Stansted Airport. House prices tend to be highest in this area of Colchester. Large out of town retail park at Stanway. East Colchester is the area nearest to Essex University and the area is undergoing some substantial redevelopment and modernisation. |
Transport.
Bus links throughout the town are generally very
comprehensive and frequent. Traffic can be very heavy
during the rush hour times of 8.00-9.00am and
4.30-6.00pm, especially around the North Station area
which is prone to gridlock and along the Avenue of
Rememberance, Ipswich Road and Clingoe Hill/St Andrews
Avenue which are also prone to long queues during peak
times. There is talk of a permanant daily Park and Ride
service being introduced at some time in the future which
may help this problem.
Rail links to London (Liverpool Street/Stratford), Ipswich, Chelmsford and the coast at Harwich/Clacton are very good with regular services from North Station. There are some Colchester to Liverpool Street express services and these take as little as 40-45 minutes to complete the journey. Parking at Colchester Station during weekdays can be difficult unless you get there very early - although it has a very large car park it tends to get full and the only spaces are often at the far end of the car park.
