The Sherwood Foresters Notts Derby Regiment were part of 33 Brigade, which was sent to attack Moquet Farm (nicknamed "Mucky Farm" by the British and "Moo Cow Farm" by the Australians) The farm was a heavily fortified and very strongly defended German position, which had previously held out against many determined attacks during the preceding weeks. After many heavy losses on both sides the farm was finally taken on 26th September 1916, the very day Pte J Liley was killed.
Thiepval Memorial To The Missing was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and records the names of 73,357 missing on The Somme. It Does not record all the names of men missing, they are on other Memorials.
