Hard Drive Installation

To install a new hard drive into your computer you must first decide if the new hard drive is to be the master or the slave drive, and you also need to decide if the drive is to be connected to the primary IDE channel or the secondary IDE channel.

I would recommend that the main hard drive be connected to the primary IDE channel and the CD Rom or DVD Drive be connected as the Slave device on the same IDE channel (IDE1).  If you intend to connect a second hard disk or CD Rom to your system, I would then recommend that you connect that device to the secondary IDE channel. (IDE2) and set this device as the primary device on the secondary IDE channel. If you intend to connect another hard drive or CD Rom, I would recommend that you connect that device to the secondary channel and set that device to slave.

To distinguish between the two different channels for connection to the motherboard, the blue slot is normally the primary IDE slot and the one next to it is the secondary IDE slot.  This is normally shown in the motherboard manual.

You can set the device to Slave or Primary device by setting the jumper pins on the back of the device.  The available settings are normally shown on the casing of the drive.

Using the ribbon cable supplied with the motherboard insert one end into the back of the hard drive and the other into the blue slot on the motherboard making sure that the cable is the right way round.  There is usually a notch in the middle of the plastic end plug to show the correct way to insert it.  Make sure that the pins on the back of the drive are set to master using the jumpers provided.

Next connect one of the power leads from the computer's transformer to the power connector on the hard drive.

Note: When the computer is switched on the hard drive may need to be partitioned and formatted before it can be used to store data on it.
