Motherboard Installation

What is a Motherboard?

Well, a motherboard is the main printed circuit board that all the other
components are connected to.

There are different types of motherboard but the most common in use in the home computer is the ATX form factor.

Whenever possible, I would recommend that you fit the Processor, Heat sink and Fan before you fit the Motherboard into the case as this will give you more room to work with.

The kitchen table is a good surface to work on when fitting components to the Motherboard.

Use an anti-static padding under the Motherboard to prevent damage to the circuit board.

Once the Processor and Fan assembly are fitted to the Motherboard you can the fit the Motherboard into the computer case but be careful not to damage any of the components.

Using the screws provided, screw the Motherboard down gently.  There will be about a nine screw holes for this task.

The computer case normally has a power supply  already fitted but that power supply might not be powerful enough for the processor that you intend to fit.

Most current processors and motherboards require at least a 400watt power supply and there is also a difference between Pentium type motherboards and AMD type motherboards.

Pentium Type Motherboards

The Pentium Type motherboards require a power supply that has an extra connection for the ATX type motherboard, this is normally a small 4 hole square type connector.

AMD Type Motherboards

The AMD type motherboards are the same as the Pentium type without the 4 hole square connector.
