Processor Installation

What is a Processor?

A processor or CPU for short is the brain of the computer and must be handled with care when installing.  There are different types of CPU that go with different types of motherboard.  When you purchase a new motherboard, the manual that comes with it will tell you which types of processor can be fitted.  Most suppliers offer motherboard kits which include "Motherboard, Processor & Memory Chips".  Most CPU's need a cooler fan to prevent overheating and this is usually supplied with the CPU or motherboard kit.

The Processor socket has a little lever witch you lift up to allow the Processor to drop into the socket.  You then secure the Processor into the socket by pressing the lever down and allowing it to lock into position.

Note: be very careful when inserting the processor so as not to bend or damage any of the pins. It should drop into place without any force at all.

Once the Processor is clamped into position, you can apply the bonding paste that normally comes with the Processor.  Be sure not to get any air bubbles in the paste as this can allow heat to become trapped and overheat the Processor.

You can then apply the Heat sink and Fan assembly but you must be careful not to use too much force or damage to the Processor can occur.  Make sure that the Heat sink and Fan assembly are level at all times when pressing down to engage the Fan assembly clips.
