Newbury Symphony Orchestra

Online Historical Archive Pages

The Newbury Symphony Orchestra is the local amateur symphony orchestra for the town of Newbury, Berkshire, having been founded on November 27 1879 as the Newbury Amateur Orchestral Union. It is one of the oldest continually functioning amateur orchestras in England, and we are fortunate enough to have a comprehensive set of records dating from the earliest days.

I have been asked the question “which is the very oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra in Britain”. My guess is that this distinction belongs to the Gorton Philharmonic Society, founded in 1854, and of course the Hallé Orchestra which was founded in 1857. The Newbury Symphony Orchestra is certainly one of the oldest orchestras in the south of England.
