Corfu has many strange and beautiful insects, this is but a very small sample of them.
On the left is a Praying Mantis found on my doorstep. The name Mantis is Greek for for prophet or soothsayer. The female is known to bite the head off of her partner during mating.

This Montpelier snake was nearly two metres long. This snake is poisonous to small animals but can’t open its mouth far enough to bite humans.

On the right is a Migratory Locust this insect is no longer a major threat to the food industry.
The aptly named Striped Shield bug one of the stink bugs (uses a volatile defence for predators).

Many frogs can be seen and heard all over Corfu
Tortoises can sometimes be seen in Corfu but even some locals have never seen them

The lizard on the left is a Starred Agama introduced into Corfu around 1915
on the right I think this is the Maniola telmessia (a type of meadow brown). this
was seen in May.
The terrapin on the right was seen in a few inches of water
On the right is a Green lizard lacerta viridis.
Algyroides moreoticus or Greek Algyroides is on the right, found only in southern
Greece and the Ionian islands.
On the left is Ephippiger ephippiger, both male & female sing during the day with
a double chirp.
On the right is Cetonia aurata or the rose chafer so called because it feeds on the
nectar of flowers.
On the left is a turkish-gecko
On the right is a large centipede.

The very common collared-dove and the woodchat shrike were both photographed in our
garden
On the left are white-egrets on lake korission
The Scops owl can be heard day and night during the summer months but is rarely seen
due to its excellent camouflage
Stilt seen on lake Korission in summer, perhaps someone can tell me what sort of
stilt this is ?
Many types of finch can be seen this is a goldfinch
