Golden Retrievers

- A Better Type of Dog

This site is dedicated to our Goldies. We have had in total four to date and in chronological order :
Trudie (Melansia Moonglow) 1974 - 91
Jess 1984 - 1999
Cleo (Whaddon Bella Amour) 1991 - 2003
Hannah 1999 - to date

This site also features Olie who is our daughter's (& son in-law's) boy Goldie
Olie 2002 - to date
All four (and Olie) have been pedigree dogs but unless their breeder registers them, we do not. This is because we do not show or breed from our girls; they are part of the family and as such do not need kennel names. We went to a dog show once and found they were not for us although it must be accepted that without these events there probably would not be such a well-regulated and conscientious organisation that would police the dog-breeding world. Now off my soap box….. Anyone who knows or is owned by (Goldies tend to take over) a Golden Retriever cannot help to understand what makes these lovable dogs so precious to their owners. A Golden Retriever in the family means that you are never alone, you always have a friendly greeting when you come in and someone who cares for you and your loved ones. If you are like us and have more than one Goldie then you have the best of both worlds, your pet will not be lonely when you are out and they will be happy and contented, as Goldies love company and another Goldie is almost as good as a human companion to them. Yes, I believe Goldies prefer a loving human to another Goldie. They really are a "people dog" but if you do have two of them then you will be rewarded twice over and the Goldies will never be lonely. An added benefit of having two Goldies is that if one is mature it will teach the other what it needs to know about housetraining and keep it occupied so that the puppy will not tend to cause mischief when you are out. I don't know if the older dog communicates to the puppy to tell it not to chew the wall or door but we really don't get the damage we did with just a puppy on its own! When it comes to exercise a Goldie loves to run and chase around as they always have plenty of energy to spare. However, in our experience don't expect your Goldie to fetch sticks or balls, this is only done when they feel like it. None of our Goldies, with the exception of Hannah, would fetch more than twice and then they would look at you as if to say "If you are going to throw it away then you obviously don't want it!. The item would not then be retrieved. Hannah likes the game so she will play fetch. If you are lucky enough to have two Goldies to exercise together then all you need is an open space and they will exercise themselves. It is a joy to watch two Goldies playing together as a Goldie never really grows up and always likes to play. So our recommendation is to have two Goldies if at all possible as they really are not twice the work. This is a very brief overview of our love affair with the breed of Golden Retrievers

Stop Press

We are sad to announce the loss of Cleo who passed away a few weeks ago after a short illness.
Cleo was a wonderful dog who had the most beautiful temperament and ways. She was loved by everyone who knew her and a few of our friends (hello Norma and Rosemary) who are not dog people were converted to Goldies by her. She is now at rest with Trudy and Jess under a rosebush called appropriately "Simply the Best".
