Northern Premier League Division 1
Goole AFC 1 : Bishop Auckland 0
20 September, 2005
Team: Horrigan, Coulthard, Irvine, Coghlan, Hall, Mason, Damon Robson, Bell, Sheeran, Jardine, I'Anson (Newby 62mins)
The
euphoria of Saturday's win evaporated in Humberside when Bishops were beaten by
a direct Goole side who had conceded three goals in each of their last four
games.
Once again, Bishops handed victory on a plate to their mid-table opponents with
another display of poor discipline, and another gift wrapped goal.
The pattern of play was clear from early in the game with Goole content to pump
the ball forward at the first available opportunity, and Bishops trying to run
the ball through on the ground. Neither methods looked particularly
effective in the opening exchanges.
Bishops had the first chance when Damon Robson crossed for I'Anson whose shot
was blocked at close range.
On 16 minutes a long ball into the box from Goole failed narrowly to find an
unmarked striker with the goal at his mercy.
Sheeran headed narrowly wide on 25 minutes from Coghlan's free-kick. On 32
minutes Hall headed a corner goalwards only to see the ball hacked away from
just in front of the goalline. I'Anson's shot from the rebound went just
wide.
Just after the interval, Damon Robson and Coghlan combined to set up Sheeran who
curled a shot a yard wide of the far post from 12 yards.
Goole almost took the lead on 50 minutes when a fast low cross bobbled over an
outstretched boot to the relief of Bishops defence.
Mason was booked on 51 minutes when he pulled a Goole player trying to run
around him. On 54 minutes the referee was forced to halt proceedings to
break up a dispute between Bell and Goole's No.9 with another two yellow cards
being waved.
On 59 minute Horrigan pulled off a fine low save which kept Bishops level, but
on 62 minutes the usual failings surfaced again when Jardine was fouled just
inside the Goole half. With the referee waving for play to continue,
Jardine leant into the Goole player whose theatrical dive was spotted by the
officials. Unfortunately, the referee's assistant "bought" the
fall, and Jardine was given a red card.
Bishops hung on grimly to the point on offer with Horrigan producing an
excellent save when goal looked inevitable on 65 minutes, and on 73
minutes Bishops were again unlucky when a cross sailed through the area only
feet from the goal without anyone being able to apply the final touch.
Bishops looked to have taken the lead on 74 minutes when I'Anson bundled the
ball towards the goal. The ball appeared to have crossed the goal-line
before it was cleared, but Jardine's tormentor on the line again adjudged in
favour of the home side.
Substitute Newby had Goole's keeper sprawling as he unleashed a 30 yard shot
through a crowd of players on 80 minutes but no Bishop forwards were close
enough to capitalise on the fumble.
After keeping Bishops in the game for much of the final third of the game,
Horrigan's nightmare continued as he spilled a high cross which fell behind him
for Goole substitute Shaw to blast into the net from a foot out.
Deep into injury time Bell blazed over from a tight angle, as Bishops piled on
the pressure, but ultimately the game was lost.
