Bishop Auckland 1 : Whitley Bay 2

26 August, 2006

Team:  John Collinson, Paul Griffith, Steven Baynes (Paul Crager 46mins), Richie Ward, Nicky Mohan, Levent Yalcin, Dan Newby, Steve Newham, Stephen Winspear (Michael Robinson 86mins), Richie Storr, Bryan Stewart (Scott Richards 46mins)

Bishops conceded a late winner for the third consecutive league game after taking a second half lead.

Nicky Mohan made his first start of the season and Bishops manager Brian Healy gave a debut to ex-York City player Levent Yalcin.   Bishops made a confident start, and carved out a good chance on 8 minutes when a corner was flicked to Storr whose looping header was comfortably saved by Burke.

Whitley Bay had a great chance on 28 minutes when a corner was headed goalwards, only for Newham to make a spectacular goal-line clearance.

Stewart picked up a booking on 44 minutes for encroachment at a free-kick.  A minute later Whitley Bay's No.4 headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

The second half was end to end stuff, with the best early chance bringing a superb flying save from Collinson.   On 60 minutes substitute Richards broke the corner of the box and fired in a superb low cross which just evaded Yalcin in the middle and Newby at the far post.

Bay responded immediately with a similar attack which ended with a high cross across the face of goal and to safety.

Bishops took the lead on 62 minutes.  A short back pass saw Storr block tackle the 'keeper.  The ball broke free, and Storr picked himself up to sidefoot home into the open net.

Bay equalised through ex-Bishops player Mark Sheeran on 70 minutes.  Mohan conceded a penalty with a heavy challenge on the edge of the area, and Sheeran fired home from the spot.

Bishops continued to attack, and it was after a string of four consecutive Bishops corners that Bay broke fast, and with the defence stranded up field, Phillips fired home a spectacular winner into the top corner.

Yalcin missed Bishops best chance for an equaliser when he headed over the bar when clear in front of goal after the ball was flicked to him from a long throw.

Bay almost added another in injury time but the ball was fired into the side-netting after Collinson was rounded.
