Bishop Auckland 1 : Morpeth Town 3

Team:  Chris Porter, Adam Clough, Steven Baynes (Max Applegarth 88 mins), Paul Collins, Nicky Mohan, Paul Campbell (Matthew Coad 80 mins), Newton Boyce (Joe Fairish 66 mins), Levant Yalcin, Jamie Clarke, Richie Storr, Gavin Parkin

Bishops crashed to a disappointing defeat in their first home game for nine weeks to a Morpeth Town side equally starved of fixtures.  Brian Healy introduced two new players in Adam Clough signed from Sunderland Nissan and Newton Boyce.

The pitch was heavy, and the weather bright and breezy, but Morpeth made the best of the early exchanges and should have taken the lead on ten minutes when a free header was directed wide of the target.

Richie Storr had Bishops first real effort as late as the 25th minute when he twisted inside the box but shot into the side netting.  Parkin came close soon after when he was able to push the ball past Poskett wide on the right and cross past the sprawling ‘keeper, but was unable to find a colleague in the area.

Collins made a mess of a punt over the top and trod on the ball, but Porter spared his blushes with a fine diving save on 33 minutes, but Morpeth took the lead on 38 minutes when their No.10 waltzed through the box and clipped the ball over Porter from 15 yards.

In the final minutes of the half Clarke broke through the Morpeth Town defence only to be hacked to the floor by the final defender.  A yellow card and a weak free kick was poor reward.

The home side started the second half on top and Clarke beat his man to create a one-on-one which Poskett saved well.  The ball rebounded to Storr who lobbed beautifully only to see his goalbound effort headed off the line.

Bishops were on the attack when Morpeth doubled their lead.  An attack in the Morpeth area broke down and Poskett launched the ball the length of the field and two touches later the ball was in the net.

The last line of Morpeth defence was again required on 65 minutes when Mohan’s header from a Boyce corner was headed off the line by the man on the post.

Joe Fairish replaced debutant Boyce on 66 minutes and made an immediate impact at both ends of the pitch with another hardworking display.

Bishops had a lifeline on 75 minutes when Parkin pressurised two Morpeth defenders into a mistake wide on the right, picked up the loose ball and crossed low past the diving Poskett to Clarke who sidefooted home from ten yards.

Bishops pushed for an undeserved equaliser, but Morpeth scored again on 83 minutes to end the contest.  In the final minutes, Clarke fired just wide and Morpeth had their No.3 sent off for a rough tackle on Fairish.  The red card seemed harsh given what had gone before, but was in keeping with the senior official’s general performance.
