Ashington 0 : Bishop Auckland 1

Team:  Chris Porter, Stephen Larkin,  Paul Crager, Richie Ward (Paul Griffith 75mins), Nicky Mohan, Paul Campbell, Adam Clough, Richie Storr, Gavin Parkin (Matthew Coad 70mins), Lev Yalcin, Dale Mendum

Peter Mulcaster took charge of his first game with the Two Blues at a windy Portland Park, Ashington.  Richie Storr and Chris Porter returned to the line-up after suspension with Dale Mendum returning on the wing.

Bishops kicked against the wind in the first half and played some decent football, creating several half chances before Lev Yalcin missed an excellent chance to open the scoring on the half hour when he fired wide with just the ‘keeper to beat.

Porter kept Bishops level just before half time when he saved a deflected free kick and the defence and ‘keeper combined to keep out the rebounds.

The second half saw Bishops again edge the play without creating too many clear chances.  With the wind continuing to cause trouble, a single goal looked likely to settle the game.

Coad came on after 70 minutes for Parkin, and it was the substitute who broke the deadlock on 83 minutes when he glanced a Yalcin corner into the corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Bishops were able to defend their lead with some ease, and used the wind to their advantage.  As the away team ran down the clock, frustration set in, and a few yellows were shown before the final whistle ended the match to give Bishops the “double” against the Northumberland side.
