Bishop Auckland 1 : Esh Winning 0

at Esh Winning

Team:  Chris Porter, Shaun Boynton, Paul Harvey, Jason Newall, Craig Winter, Scott Richards, Joe Fairish, Robert Clarkson (Daryll Evans 52mins), Dane Wilson, Wayne Flanagan (Darren Richardson 72mins), Dale Mendum

Bishops nicked their switched tie at Esh Winning with and injury time goal from Dane Wilson.

Manager Peter Mulcaster gave a debut to Jason Newall, and a first start to Wayne Flanagan, with Paul Griffith suspended, Paul Crager injured and Gavin Parkin unavailable.

The match kicked off in hot sunshine with Esh kicking downhill and the yellow & greens almost took the lead on 13 minutes when Bailes fired across Porter and against the inside of the far post.  Esh continued to make all the chances and when Boynton stumbled on a pass across defence, Porter was called into action but Bailes’ shot was half blocked by the recovering defender and gathered by Porter.

It took until the dying minutes of the half before Bishops came into the game.  On 44 minutes Wilson flicked to Flanagan who passed to Mendum whose shot from fifteen yards was deflected just over the bar.  From the resulting corner the ball fell to Wilson whose eight yard shot was saved by ‘keeper Molyneux’s legs.

Bishops started the second half strongly, and were unlucky not to be in the lead on 49 minutes.  Harvey’s long throw flicked off a defender’s head to Mendum whose shot from six yards was blocked by the ‘keeper.  The rebound fell again to Mendum but his second shot struck a defender and flew to safety.

A minute later a deep cross found Newall in some space at the back post.  His well directed goalbound header was well saved by Molyneux.  The rebound was fired back in but Molyneux saved again.  The ball then flew out to Winter whose header was collected by the ‘keeper.

After this Bishops pressure, Esh immediately went up the pitch and hit the post for a second time.

Clarkson was replace by Evans, and Flanagan by Richardson as the Bishops management team tried to get the vital win.  Wilson and Richards both picked up bookings as Bishops continued to press for the win.

Esh broke again on 81 minutes and full back Megram’s shot from a tight angle skimmed off the top of the bar.

The 90 minutes were already up when Fairish won the ball wide on the right and pushed it through for Mendum, who changed direction and fired in a pin-point cross for Wilson to head home from inside the six yard box.

Time was up, and the final whistle followed very soon after.  Bishops face Winterton Rangers in the second qualifying round in two weeks time.
